Re: P-47 Thunderbolt: The USAAF's Best Pursuit Aircraft

I don't know what all those kill statistics are supposed to prove. Of course Hartmann had far more kills than any non German ace and he certainly had far more combat experience than any non German ace as had all those over 100 German aces who shot down more than 100 aircraft but if you put them on t...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

Bismarck's poor AA performance was due to a very low number of light AA guns (like all ships in 1941), a hand loaded single shot(!) 3,7cm AA gun, two types off mountings for the 10,5cm guns, which caused half of them to miss due to faulty synchronisation with the AA directors and most improtantly la...

For the turrets of US ships look here: viewtopic.php?t=4170&p=47923

I also had the impression that they had very good protected turrets, but that was not the case.

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

Calm down a bit, Karl, even if someone like Dave, Thorsten or Marc posts something one should not shut up, but definitely one should listen. ;) Besides, I am no expert at all. Just be happy, that people have started, thanks to the contributers mentioned above, to reevaluate BS from mediocre to a ver...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

regards ede PS It might be strange for Americans, but more and bigger is not always better :-) Well, regarding battleships, bigger generally is better; Bismarck & Tirpitz are an exception to that generality... Remember thath KGV and SoDak are nowhere near 35k standard displacement (only through...

Re: Now the dumb Jackass...

Would you trade your cheap cars and gas for our Autobahn with no speed limit (or at least 120 km/h, meaning every German drives around 140)? :D Driving 200 km/h can be quite funny at times but if you pay 1,50€ a litre it hurts as fast as you drive. ;) Since Germany is afaik the only country left wit...

Re: Bismarck/Tirpitz = most powerfull European battleships

The document cited by Thorsten says that the increase in protection is about 30-50% when the shell breaks up and 10-20 % if it is decapped and/or yawed. This document also says that yaw can improve penetration but maybe they are referring to the shell being deflected to the normal. http://www.kbisma...

Re: Bismarck/Tirpitz = most powerfull European battleships

Thanks for the summary, Thorsten. So what we have is, that if the projectile breaks up, the spaced array can be 30-50% more effective, which is not going to happen with the 50mm Oberdeck. If the projectile gets decapped (which it does) and yawed correctly, spaced arrays can be 10-20% more effective ...

Re: Gun-loading question

All 4 French post treaty ships had any angle loading but suffered from jams at higher angles and usually loaded at 15°. They were full of innovations but also seemed to be a bit too much ahead with their wishes resulting in problems/failures (their RPC which was only fitted in R and JB after problem...

Re: Bismarck/Tirpitz = most powerfull European battleships

One notes that the body of mostly secondary and beyond secondary based sources that have established the conventional wisdom concerning the Bismarck's design, and particularly the armour scheme, are vaugely cited, if cited at all. Most people here know what is written by Okun on navweaps and this c...

Re: Bismarck/Tirpitz = most powerfull European battleships

So if a spaced array is superiour and if the superheavies were especially prone to fail against such a design I would like to se the relevant documents to back up these theories which should be very easy to provide for someone who has them on his computer. Such categoric statements can not be suppo...

[ What is the source of your argument, that the striking angle was not 33°? Besides it is not the only angle given at over 30°. a) Absence of evidence of a 8* list by the bow b) The probable distance Massachussets was firing from (20-22km), corresponding to an angle of fall of 24-25*. c) the drawin...

Re: Bismarck/Tirpitz = most powerfull European battleships

I "got it" from several debates with members of the forum who have access to much more primary documents than I have. One of those documents depicts the re-construction of Tirpitz in 1945-1946, in order to test the effects of heavy shell fire (14", 15" and 16") against the ...

Re: Bismarck/Tirpitz = most powerfull European battleships

Do you base that on what delcyros wrote on navweaps (which is only his opinion)? It was some time ago I looked into Jordan/Dumas but Richard Worth came to the same conclusion. Who is Delycros ? The problems of the French armor are documented. I only know about: - the testimony of a German engineer,...
