Re: Read about or do?

Hi Bgile:

Is it true that a sub tends to roll heavily due to the round hull?

Re: Kaiser Wilhelm photo

Yes Robert, he was a supporter of the Navy and bought the first iron ships during his presidency.

Nilsson, thanks again for the data. I wish I knew German, that would add several books to my wishlist!!

Re: Kaiser Wilhelm photo

Well, so that´s the answer, June 24th 1907 in Kiel. Does the book say who was the commander in that cruise? Are you Spanish speaker?

Thanks for your time.

Re: Kaiser Wilhelm photo

Hi all: Would the ship have included incursions into the Baltic and the Med on these round Atlantic cruises? Yes Robert, it was common at least to enter the Med, and visit Italy. Herr Nilsson: The phoho was taken in Kiel according to some sources, the article doesn´t say that the Kaiser came on boar...

Re: Kaiser Wilhelm photo

Hi Terje: Indeed the Sarmiento was in the 1902 Naval Review. Her career: from 1900 until 1937 she was used to carry the last year Naval College students in a "round the world" instruction trip. I should mention she is a three-masted full-rigged ship built in UK for this purpose. The "...

Re: Kaiser Wilhelm photo

I must say that I am amazed of your knowledge about us, or at least of your effort in the search!!!! The ARA Sarmiento was commissioned in 1898. I think that it is pretty sure that she is the ship: the stairs on the right were used to clear the high bulwarks (still are, as the ship is still extant a...

Re: Kaiser Wilhelm photo

Thanks for your answer Terje. The photograph was submitted to a local naval history forum. Originally it was captioned as the Argentine president visiting the training ship Sarmiento in Buenos Aires, but then someone said that the photo was taken in Kiel during a visit of the ship to Germany and tha...

Well, being leftist wouldn´t prevent you of defending your country, unless you were pro-russian too!!! For the sea-sickness don´t worry: I am a sea-sick sailboat man and can say that you would eventually get used to it.

Re: Graf Spee weakness?

to seek refuge in Montevideo (while he can go to Buenos Aires) His decision to enter Montevideo instead of Buenos Aires was correct. To access Buenos Aires he had to sail the channel that starts just in front of Montevideo. This channel is more than 100 miles long and there is no way that a ship so...

Re: Read about or do?

I would prefer the tea clipper era, those ships were really beautiful.
