Re: RFC equipped Yamato vs. Iowa

I would suggest reading the damage report for USS South Dakota to give some idea of the kind of havoc a large number of non-penetrating hits can cause. I would take the 30.000 yards probability (which would be higher than the 40.000-35.000 range being analized). That means that of the 108 shells fi...

Re: RFC equipped Yamato vs. Iowa

The logical conclusion is that even Yamato's fighting ability would be degraded by multiple 16" hits even if they were non penetrating. Hi lwd, I would like to know what impacts (aside from the bridge and fire control positions) do you believe would affect Yamato´s ability. Anyone can tell the...

Re: Radar fire control

Dave, for low angle control, how long had the radar to feed the conputer with bearing and range to obtain an accurate target´s speed and course?

Re: RFC equipped Yamato vs. Iowa

Yamato's fire control is not under armor. There's also a chance of getting to her secondary magazines.
Do you mean that Yamato´s secondary battery magazines are above the protectve deck?

Re: Bismarck´s last battle. Better stopped than wandering?

Thanks Vic. Do you think that Lindemann had any hope of getting out of the situation?

Bismarck´s last battle. Better stopped than wandering?

Hi all. Bearing in mind that the irregular course described by Bismarck because of her rudder damage spoiled her fire control, wouldn´t it have been better just to stop the ship so that at least her fire was accurate? Better yet, would dropped anchors, even not touching bottom, have acted as sea anc...

Re: RFC equipped Yamato vs. Iowa

If Yamato closes at 30 knots (to make the math easy) it takes her ~10 minutes to close from 40,000 to 30,000 yards. If Iowas steers a course at 30 degrees away from Yamato it cuts her closing speed to 15 knots at best. If Iowa steers 30 degrees from Yamato´s course she is running, so it needs no fu...

Re: RFC equipped Yamato vs. Iowa

Karl, what about the front bulkhead? Is right my source? Does the bulkhead extends from deck to bottom?

Re: RFC equipped Yamato vs. Iowa

Maintaining 35000 yards means that Iowa is running away and that gives her just 3 guns to fire. I would not consider this option. Suppose that Iowa needs to protect a beach head and needs to stay and defeat Yamato before she reaches the ships anchored. Iowa would be beam on to maximize fire rate and...

Re: RFC equipped Yamato vs. Iowa

The superiority of the aircraft over the BB was demonstrated just in December 10th 1941, when PoW and Repulse were lost to airborne torpedo and dive bombers, not before. So Iowa as well as Yamato were designed before this, and without the aircraft factor in mind (I strongly believe). Had that been k...

Re: Radar fire control

I watched them Dunmunro. I have also read one article in Warships called The Admiralty Fire Control Tables and a three part one in WI called The Dreyer and the Dumaresq. But what I like of Dreadnought Gunnery.... is the fact that in describing the evolution of the first fire control system, the auth...

Radar fire control

Hi all: Not to disturb the Yamato vs. Iowa thread, I created this new one to discuss some aspects of the radar fire control system. I am in the process of reading Dreadnought Gunnery and the Battle of Jutland, a must for naval enthusiasts, and finally got a grasp on the intricacies of optical fire c...

Hi Bgile:

Is it true that a sub tends to roll heavily due to the round hull?
