Re: That 0555 turn....
Alberto, I really doubt that the aircraft handlers, well sheltered behind the aft superstructure were at issue from Y-turret. The fact is the salvo plot puts the A-arcs opening at just before 0558... Unfortunately the salvo plot we have doesn't indicate who drew it. But its track obviously has basic...

Re: That 0555 turn....
Hmmm... Herr Nilsson's question on McMullen got me thinking... and now I have questions: The AFCT would require the input of the ship's course, speed and that of the target for every salvo. It is supposed to have a paper plot that: which could plot both own ship and target ship movement and record t...

Re: Denmark Strait hits on HMS PoW
Hi all, @ Alberto Hunter-Terry places the C-F hit at about a minute after Hood blew up. My scenario puts it at about that plus a little. Remember too that the British (Leach's report) put the CP hit at 0602:30 - long after it really happened and after the C-F hit. And.. Hunter-Terry says Bismarck's ...

Re: Denmark Strait hits on HMS PoW
More, the photo NH69724, showing the initial explosion phase (there is still the vertical pillar of smoke well visible, shows PoW at 800 meters from Hood and the PG film shows PoW CP hit and salvo 16 (fired at 6:00:50) at a distance that is NOT compatible with an explosion of Hood 3 minutes before:...

That 0555 turn....
Hi all, Decided to pull this out of the hits on PoW thread as it is a separate topic. Here's my take on the concern as to whether the turn took place before or after Hood was hit on her boat deck: I believe that Holland knew exactly what he was about. He was closing in to a point at which he felt co...

Re: Denmark Strait hits on HMS PoW
Hi all, Duncan, Cag, Wadinga, Herr Nilsson.....Guys...you have made my day! My week even! :D I know opinions are divided on the matter of the time frame for Hood's demise and I accepted that and moved on. But seeing it raised again in relation to this hit on PoW, I have to once again reiterate that ...

Re: Denmark Strait hits on HMS PoW
I can't find any RN accounts that state that Bismarck withheld fire for several minutes. Ted Briggs. In his Board testimony he stated Bismarck opened fire after Hood had fired 4 or 5 salvos. The HOOD opened fire with the forward turrets 17 miles range, and the BISMARCK and the PRINCE EUGEN we about...

Re: Denmark Strait hits on HMS PoW
IMHO the 15" UW could not be felt at all in CP due to its low velocity after travelling 80 feet under water, its bulge perforation (thin plates punctured) and its failed explosion. Hey....would you consider that information Leach presented in his narrative was based in part on reports he recei...

Re: Denmark Strait hits on HMS PoW
Happy New Year to everyone! Hi Cag, Thanks for your vote of confidence! And the work you are doing is much appreciated from my standpoint as well. Once again, human interpretation and recall - which has been shown to be very faulty - is the source of confusion and we really have to look past ...

Re: Denmark Strait hits on HMS PoW
It's trajectory was rising relative to the ship as it passed through (12 feet inside the ship). I find this very curious. Deflected upwards after passing through the outer hull? Or was the ship heeling to port in a starboard turn? In the report, the comment was that ship was not rolling, but Brooke...

Re: Denmark Strait hits on HMS PoW
Put simply was this hit similar to the others, from a forward direction or as is shown on the Hood website from aft? Hi Cag, ...I think you need to look again. The Hood website diagram shows the hit coming from forward, just as described in the damage report. See hit #5 in the diagram below from ht...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1
Someone gave me as a gift the David J. Bercuson and Holger H. Herwig book, ... and at page 153 I read the statement : "... on the British cruisers Suffolk and Norfolk, still trailing the German task force ten to twelve nautical ( sea ) miles off to the east ". As you can see not only me, ...

He has most certainly made his mark and is owed a great debt of gratitude for placing this great resource at our fingertips. I hope it will be maintained. May he R.I.P.dunmunro wrote:Smith's work has been invaluable in illuminating the modern history of the Royal and Commonwealth Navies.

Re: Death of Lt Cdr John "Jock" Moffat
It really saddens me to learn this. Mr. Moffat was so pleasant and humble in all his interviews and I certainly enjoyed reading his book "I Sank the Bismarck".
He survived Bismarck's AA fire to live a long, fulfilling life. May his soul be blessed to rest in eternal peace.
