Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

AA performance was bad in the early stages of war. US Navy achieved some degree of excelence in the use of saturation: many ships in concentric formations protecting the aircraft carriers. In this inmense number of repetition weapons installed in massive formations is how the US Navy was capable of ...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

Djoser: I haven't seen the Tuskeegee Airmen movie yet--I am afraid to, after seeing the movie poster showing a Mustang shooting down a Me-262. Maybe the movie isn't yet more jingoistic propaganda, but I am not hopeful... It's no better than Pearl Harbor, U-571 or Unglorious Bastards: is just junk. ...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

Djoser: In terms of relative effectiveness of Axis vs. Allied armed forces, I think the casualty ratios for ground combat in the European theatre are quite telling. The German army was vastly outnumbered in men and materiel, yet managed to inflict more casualties than it received. For an opponent s...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

I concur with Djoser on Dave Saxton’s comment because it is enlightening. An interesting aspect of this Guadalcanal action is that it is historical evidence that it was USS South Dakota, and not Bismarck, the battleship that presented flaws in it’s electrical circuit lines and breakers. A lot has be...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

boreatwork: Now if only they could make you a movie where one of those unsinkable German BBs actually stayed afloat eh? No need. There is already a british made movie in which the lone German ship stands against the might of practically all the Royal Navy Atlantic forces and that is why is the most...

I thought Avengers was surprisingly good for a comic book based movie.
It was good, however I liked more Battleship. It was nice to see that an Iowa finally sunk something...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

Friedman is quite critical on the South Dakota design in both books: Battleship Design and US Battleships. Also Raven, Garzke agreed in several of these points. The interesting part is WHY many considered this heretical? Easy: the South Dakota platform is the same that was used later in the Iowa Cla...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

I think that with the exemption of Alexandros everybody's else is missing the point, the concept and prefer to pin on an example to draw a Reductio ad Absurdum conclusion. No problem, point taken, next time we discuss comic books.

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

ede144: it's flying the stars and stripes, it must be superior to everything else. Well, that can be true after the war when the US used the german technology to fight their Cold War. An Abrams look like more to a TIger than a Sherman. And has anyone here heard the name Von Braun? Since he died the...

ede144: So I Believe that the Us Navy is often over estimated Quite correct, more than that even. In that regard there is a comment from a forum member called Tiornu (who has written some books on naval topics, some of which I have the honor of having in my library) that goes this way: If there is ...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

Dave and Alecsandros, Thanks for your interesting, objective and researched posts that helps understanding battleship design and throws away subjective and unnecesary biased comments from others. Freeing weight. That must have been their top priority... The ship was already 42000tons heavy. An incr...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

Hi Alex, I know very well that Scharnhorst or Richelieu were quite wet ships. I think that one of the most famous one is HMS Hood which according to Bruce Taylor's book was incredibly wet. Scharnhorst "wetness" even speed up the instalation of the "Atlantic bow" which helped very...
