Re: Hood at Jutland

I thought that HMS Hood was named after Samuel Hood - an admiral from the age of sail. Whether Horace Hood was a relation I don’t know. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was though. Big loss to the RN (Horace Hood) in my honest opinion. Had HMS Invincible not been blown to kingdom come then I could see ...

Re: Hood at Jutland

Gentlemen, The discussion over whether HMS hood was the most powerful ship seems to have drifted into a debate about Jutland! I realise of course that Hood was not laid down until 1916 and she was undoubtedly a powerful ship, but to combine the two debates, how would she have fared if she had been ...

Re: Was the H.M.S Hood the most powerful ship for 20 years?

Lion’s range-finders over-estimated the range by over two thousand yards and it had sunk to about 16,000yds when the Germans opened fire at 1548 . I seem to remember a tale about Tovey telling his gunnery officer that he would have "more chance of hitting Bismarck if he threw his binoculars at...

Re: Shipwreck Secrets Ep6 Jutland

I expect, as Bill has mentioned, the experts are not allowed to correct the writer/producer/director’s content for factual errors or to spoil a “good story”. All in all worth viewing though Bout the gist of it. Which is pretty nuts as the "story" doesn't need sexing up IMHO. Todays docume...

Mr Denlay,

Are you likely to do the same for the other wrecks (not being greedy!)?

Re: Adm Troubridge-right/wrong-in the GOEBEN AFFAIR

It has been a long time since I last read Gordon's "Rules of the Game" and I do not recall whether he covered the following aspect. I would imagine that the hunt for GOEBEN was the very first occasion upon which the Admiralty attempted to remotely coordinate and contro such a complicated ...

Re: Adm Troubridge-right/wrong-in the GOEBEN AFFAIR

Another tidbit after reading through some of my period references on RN 1914 armor penetration trials and range tables for the 9.2-in Mk X gun: The 9.2-in MK X firing a Hadfield Mk IV cast steel APC at a MV of 2,750 f/s would have to be within 9,000 yds in order to be able to penetrate 6-in FH armo...

Re: Adm Troubridge-right/wrong-in the GOEBEN AFFAIR

Hello All, There are serious discrepancies in reports of the speed Goeben could achieve as a result of boiler problems. Her perceived ability to outrun or out manoeuvre and engage in gunnery at her optimum distance against Troubridge's squadron obviously weighed heavy on his mind. The shadowing HMS...
