Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood
Maybe so, but in spite of all those redundancies the South Dakota was shit out of luck as far as fire control (or any offensive capability whatsoever) after a relatively weak battering to the upper superstructure at 2nd Guadalcanal. Though this was admittedly primarily due to electrical failure, and...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood
Let's remember the odds against Bismarck & PE at Denmark Strait, and the result... On paper. There were several factors which swung it the German way for the initial run in, which would have been negated somewhat if the Germans hadn't sunk Hood quickly. On paper? It was real, man!...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood
I keep going over the possibilities in this, the penultimate--but not unrealistic--scenario featuring the KGM in something approaching fleet status. However I never thought about Tovey wanting to remain in KGV and that changes a lot, also giving the Brits more of an edge, so long as those turrets/gu...

Re: 1939 Battleship Forces: US Navy vs Royal Navy
In an alternative world history pitting the US vs the British, I doubt very much that there would be the identical German, Russian, & Japanese states. I suspect that a lot more would change than just this one particular conflict. Say the Germans were not humiliated and saddled with such enormous...

Re: Royal Navy Super Battleships and Battlecruisers
And no way could the Scharnhorst survivors have forgotten an explosion of the magnitude which occurred on the Barham.

Re: Royal Navy Super Battleships and Battlecruisers
Certainly not an immediate, catastrophic, and fatal explosion due undeniably to one particular salvo hitting, as in so many of the RN major ship losses in both wars.

Re: Royal Navy Super Battleships and Battlecruisers
That 'turret hit rule' for the RN ships is a huge generalisation, assuming you're refering to the BC disasters at Jutland (Queen Mary, Indefatigable and Invincible). Historically the designs were sound for BCs, but the crew purposely removed the safety systems in order to increase rate of fire. Bea...

Re: Royal Navy Super Battleships and Battlecruisers
Politically its an odd alignment, I assume this was done as purely a wargaming excercise without reference as to how such a line up could occur in the first place. RF is right about the political alignment, it is wierd. Did you just roll a dice or something? I have read that many people in t...

Re: Bismarck 38cm artillery muzzle velocity
The more I read about the 38 cm SK C34, the more I think this precision engineered naval rifle has been consistently underrated in the popular (allied) accounts of the war. Not that it was necessarily better than the extremely impressive US late model 16" gun--that was hard to beat by virtue of...

Re: Prinz Eugen stays with Bismarck
If every one agrees that the German flak effectiveness would have been notably better [but maybe not enough to prevent all Swordfish attacks] , we can certainly agree that- At least- the lucky rudder hit on the Bismarck would be extremely unlikely with PE also providing flak fire. So end result is ...

Prinz Eugen stays with Bismarck
At the time, it probably seemed that releasing PE was the only way to save the ship. But isn't it also possible that keeping them together would have altered circumstances such that both ships escaped sinking? I looked for a similar thread but didn't see one. My apologies if this has already been su...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood
Ah yes with carriers in the picture, not much chance for the germans. I was envisaging a Denmark Strait type situation. Again, kind of a surprise for the Germans--as even this powerful three BB/BC squadron would not want to take on 2 BBs and 3 BCs, even if R & R were not really meant for a slugf...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood
Yes of course the R & R should be included, since this scenario predicates the Hood catastrophe and subsequent fear for the lighter skinned capital ships. Many thanks for the suggestion. This would also help balance things out. Especially if both KGVs guns malfunctioned at once!
