For Bismarck the volume of the 6 boiler rooms + 3 turbine rooms is 10,250 m3 (9,835 m3 without the cable alley).
The turbine rooms alone are 4,660 m3 (4,520 m3 without the cable alley).

M I is machinery in regard of propulsion (boilers, turbines etc. but also smoke stacks and piping). M II is auxiliary machinery (for capstans, rudders etc., but also the heating installation). M II was 1400 tonnes IIRC.

This is from the weight List M I (2800 tonnes at 115000 SHP norm. and 138000 SHP max.) from Dezember, 30th 1936 including 252.2 tonnes water and 32 tonnes of 2 spare propellers.

No, I don't have primary sources to support my theory, but in my experience ship building is always a weight saving issue.

But Brooklyn wasn't a German warship. The German battlecruisers in WW I required 4 sets of propellers, shafts and turbines to be fast enough. Due to technological progress the German battleships of WW II required just 3 sets and were even faster.

What cruisers?

IMHO the reason for a 3-shaft propulsion was simply the fact that it was sufficient for the required speed.

Besides the fact that the picture is heavily censored/retouched, I tend to yes.

Edit: There were small fences to prevent that the cartridges rolled over board, because brass was a very scarce material. After a battle they were collected and stored in their cases in the cartridge chambers.

Taking into account a certain degree of uncertainty I tend to "yes".
