Re: Senator Ted Cruz for US President?
Even if Cruz doesn't win the nomination he elevates the debate and he's already influencing the narrative, and he will shred any moderate or any Demo in any debate on any topic. What ever room he is in, he is the smartest person in that room. Sounds like you have already decided who wins the debate...

Re: Senator Ted Cruz for US President?
They said those same things about Reagan. Reagan won. McCain and Romney didn't. Can't even remotely compare Reagan vs. the current right wing repubs. A for instance: Under Reagan, the highest tax bracket was 50%. Under Obama, (Obama, mind you) the highest fed tax bracket thru most of his time in of...

Re: Senator Ted Cruz for US President?
I would love to see Cruz win the nomination, as he does not have a chance of winning the election. The far hard right, some with Tea Party ties do not have a chance of winning, a moderate like McCain or Romney might. The Tea party does a great job (I must commend the Koch brothers who bankroll the m...

Re: Bismarck Wreck Salvage
As a general rule US sub commanders were very reluctant to pick up Japanese out of the water because they could pose a threat to the sub by committing acts of sabotage in attempting to take their own lives. I could be wrong, but I could see this for IJN personnel, but I would not think it would be ...

Re: Bismarck Wreck Salvage
Donitz was specifically indicted for his transmission of Hitler's ''no survivors'' order after the Laconia affair. Well, that was in response to what should have been a war crime from the B-24 captain, targeting units on a rescue mission flying a red cross flag. And it was very clear they were on a...

Re: Pearl Harbor - all 3 USN carriers are discovered and attacked
How about assuming that the IJA gets smart, AND the IJN and IJA co-operate well?

Re: Bismarck Wreck Salvage
As a symbol of that era, Bismarck must certainly be among the worst of all possible icons of German achievement and there are a great many people in this world, German and otherwise, who would rightfully deem any such memorialization of the ship to be the last thing they want-- a reminder of German...

Re: Pearl Harbor - all 3 USN carriers are discovered and attacked
I have already pointed out that they are almost certainly likely to be regarded with suspicion by the IJA and the community itself won't be that pro-Tojo, any more than the German and Italian communities in the eastern USA were pro-Axis. After a short period of occupation the indigenous Japanese co...

Re: Most successful RN Carrier of WW2
I like the Ark Royal, factoring both it's history (although not as impressive as a few of the other candidates) and the fact that it had a rather large air group for a British carrier.

Re: Pearl Harbor - all 3 USN carriers are discovered and attacked
Right, and the Japanese lost 26 with another 74 damaged. A bit less than 25% of their force. What do you think would have happened if they had attacked again the next day? You think they could just hang around for a few weeks getting av gas, aircraft, and bombs out of thin air? Would not make to bi...

Re: Pearl Harbor - all 3 USN carriers are discovered and attacked
It's tough to use Wake as a comparison. 3 Square miles vs about 600 for Oahu, which is not even the largest Hawaiian Island. But, Wake fell in less than 24 hours of the actual invasion taking place. Compare the weakness of British command with the resolute American command at say Wake Island - a muc...

Re: Rodney torpedoes compared to Long Lance?
Biggest negatives I see about the Long Lance was it volatility of the weapon to enemy fire. I've often wondered if it would have been better for the Japanese Heavy Cruisers to have a less volatile if perhaps less well performing torpedo on deck as opposed to the LL. On Destroyers and even light crui...

Re: Pearl Harbor - all 3 USN carriers are discovered and attacked
When one considers the comparative logistical capability, I really think the Japanese would be simply overwhelmed. 100% agree with that. I do wonder, early war, what the Japanese merchant capability was like. One thing the Japanese would have an advantage in as well was the range of their aircraft....

Re: Pearl Harbor - all 3 USN carriers are discovered and attacked
You mean early like the ones on Guadalcanal? I guess my point was that the US was just not well prepared at the outbreak of the war, whereas Japan was expecting war and was prepared. I am of the opinion (and not alone in this from what I have read) that much of Japan's early war success had to do w...

Re: Pearl Harbor - all 3 USN carriers are discovered and attacked
Compare that with American-Filipino resistance in Bataan and Corrigedor, which would likely be repreated in Hawaii, not least because it was much closer to the mainland USA. We have a lot more land mass in the Philipines than either Singapore or Hawaii - this makes it a lot tougher for the attacker...
