Re: The Heinkel HE177

I believe Green and Price are in error here. 303 mph is attributed to an A1 prototype, though. Aircraft speed is going to be dependent on aircraft mass and ordnance etc. The engine power figures are difficult since they change with altitude. So speed figures should include altitude mass & load ...

Re: The Heinkel HE177

Re: Richelieu vs. Bismarck

Gentlemen, What about crew efficiency, were the Germans better trained and able to fire faster and more accurately? As far as I understood, KM main artillery was more mechanised than other navies. So basically it was push the right button at the right time. BUT then with Bismarck , they had time fo...

A weather deck is one that doesn't have anything overhead.

Re: Yaw deck?

The so called deflecting shells have little effect on follow on penetration , since the t/d is too low. I recall the path of American shell through French battleship deck it was only a couple of degrees at most, well within measurement error. All projectiles that pass through spaced plate have yaw w...

Re: Bismarck immunity zone

Keep in mind that the citadel vertical protection scheme of the BISMARCK Class also incorporated a substantial internal glacis behind the belt (110mm Wh @ 22deg from horizontal, according to N Okun) to protect the vitals from low angle fire. Nathan's opinion is that no contemporary AP projectile wa...

Re: Bismarck immunity zone

According to Schmokle & Koop the only place I can see barbette @ 220mm was the rear of the turret barbette on the Tirpitz. The rest is 340mm. mind you looking at this site a layered 145mm + 30mm + 220mm curved. http://www.kbismarck.com/proteccioni.html Should average out to ~20" resistance ...

Re: Bismarck Alternate Propulsion

So planning to develop an entirely new 14" gun, a caliber never before used by the German Navy. Also, reducing the beam also reduces the effectiveness of the TDS. This is a common misunderstanding. the 15" gun was started in 1934 by Krupp along with the 16" gun and the 11"C34 gu...

Re: Bismarck Alternate Propulsion

OK getting speed up to 31 knots DEEP was difficult as well as keep propulsion weights close and strength/sea keeping average. Shifting to 15" guns maybe well impossible...and keep to same protection /diesel speed and displacement parameters. I tried it with three twin 15" turrets and it di...

Re: Bismarck Alternate Propulsion

Indeed, I was counting on the reduced fuel requirements in order to not end with a gargantuan ship but still achieve a long cruise range. My doubt is whether that would actually fit, its a lot of engines and two very heavy turrets in the 30m beam necessary to achieve a high speed. best I got with s...

Re: Bismarck Alternate Propulsion

Returning to the point in question, what could the KM have achieved had it decided to stick to Diesel and commerce warfare in 1934? The powerplant would be heavier and occupy a larger volume while also needing a very long and thin ship (the P-class cruisers come to mind) in order to get the best po...

Re: Bismarck Alternate Propulsion

Relatively untarnished war record? Brutal invasion and occupation of Poland? Invasion of a succession of neutral countries whose only offence was their geographic position? The list of war crimes and crimes against humanity is fairly long even at the time of Rheiubung. I was under the impression th...

Re: Bismarck Alternate Propulsion

trouble is KM was ruining Hitler's relatively untarnished war record and his efforts to isolate the UK, so he put a short leash on them. Not quite sure what this means - can you please elaborate, as a statement like that is very open to total misinterpretation. The bold section indicates my concern...
