Re: Bismarck vs. Rodney: hand to hand?

ISn't grentz equivalent with the USN "projectile in a fit state to burst" ? My understanding of the involved definitions suggests that "grenz" in german naval terminology equals more or less the US NBL, where at least 80% of the projectile´s mass are recovered behind the plate (...

Re: World´s bloodiest battle ever?

With regard to the single bloodiest day, Cannea comes second to Arausio. Battle of Arousio, 6th of oct.105BC Romans: 10 (according to oLegions (basically the complete Roman Republics military force of the day, commanded in two armies), according to Livy 80,000 legionars and to Rufus 70,000 legionars...

Re: Bismarck vs. Rodney: hand to hand?

excuses for offsetting the topic but I am curious, did PoW´s elevated High angle director allowed to feed FC gears? I was under the impression that one salvo cut the fire controll cabling leading to the HA fwd directors. I am not familar with the arrangement of FC systems in this class and would app...

Re: Bismarck vs. Rodney: hand to hand?

The idea that a certain warship can be sunk in a given timeframe represents a concept, which was disprooven by various accounts in combat. I am suprised to see such an idea popping up in this thread without beeing critically reflected upon. While a BB may take damage from gunfire at the conditions d...

Re: What was the most effective naval anti-aircraft gun of W

Our philosophy was that the shell had to perforate the target intact before detonation, something that could not be guaranteed with the German shell, even against the very thin aircraft skins of WW-II! Any even cursory examination of damage pics from then would show many partial detonations, or fai...

Re: Bismarck class turret protection

Isn´t that STRASSBOURG, the picture taken at Toulon somewhere 1944/5? Dumas and G&D mention 150mm thick turret roofs for Dunkerque...and 16cm for Strasbourg. The document you mentioned may be altered or incomplete... [on Dunkerque, 2 of the secondary quad turrets had 8cm thick roofs] It´s possib...

Re: Bismarck class turret protection

Why this assumption ? Out of convenience. Data are in part contradictive but it´s likely that KC/n.A. was right between brit. CA and US class A in stopping quality according to post war trials -at least as far as thick plates engaged by major calibre APC is concerned. Sure it was 15cm? I know that ...

Re: Bismarck class turret protection

The KGV´s turret faceplate was 520lbs CA, that´s 12.74" face hardened armour. LION´s were supposed to be 600lbs or 14.7" CA..- Thus, KGV´s vertical turret face elements -if we assume a 10% quality advantage for british CA against KC/n.A.- are roughly similar in protection than a 356mm KC/n...

Re: Bismarck class turret protection

While the previous attempt can be regarded as fairly constructive and save, extrapolation to other data appears to be more difficult. Using the 16in US class A turret faceplate of the NORTH CAROLINA class as an example, the penetraion curves suggest that the plate is likely to be penetrated at all d...

Re: Bismarck class turret protection

BISMARCK turret protection reconsidered. Disclaimer. Following a hint of Herr Nielsson that the turret faceplate appears to be the only element protected by face hardened armour of the revolving structure of the turret (the similarely face hardened KC/n.A. plates of the barbettes are fixed to the sh...

Re: Littorio class design flaws?

SCHARNHORST & GNEISENAU together sunk two DD´s at medium range exclusively from 5.9" and 4.1" fire.

However, nobody can match up with the record of SMS WESTFALEN at Jutland, credited with the sinking of four DD´s.

request: Ammo expand. figures 1940

I am trying to put things together in my databases. Is there any knowledge about the amount of 8" & 6" ammo expanded by the italian cruiser divs. during the battles of Calabria? I have a figure of 923 6in shells expanded by ORION, NEPTUNE, SYDNEY, GLOUCESTER and LIVERPOOL but no indivi...
