Re: Comparisons of Axis vs Allied Combat Vessels

My information was from here:

http://www.combinedfleet.com/b_underw.htm

It appears that they conflict with each other.

Re: Best war movie ever?

"Band of Brothers"

I thought this one was great too. I just was not sure if I should include it as it was more of a mini series than a movie.

But it felt to me like "Saving Private Ryan" but a series, and I mean that as a compliment.

Re: De-Capping Layer

Tommy 303, could not a hit on the STS layer by a nose fused common shell (5" or greater) cause some progressive flooding, as the armor belt is now inside of the STS layer?

Re: Comparisons of Axis vs Allied Combat Vessels

Mostlyharmless - Excellent points in expounding upon the topic. I think that much of the real issue I'm speaking about here may be sample base. For instance, the North Carolina and Yamato each get struck by one torpedo. The Yamato takes on about 3000 tons of water, the North Carolina 1000 tons. JUst...

Re: Refitting of ships - Armor?

I guess one question here. Where did the Barbette factor into this? Or was this magazine not protected by the barbette?

Re: Refitting of ships - Armor?

Well, Aurora, I'm not sure how much I am on the right track or not :D

I am not 100% sure as to how much the square root idea is theory and how much of it is proven.

Be interested in any one else thoughts on this matter as well.

Re: Best war movie ever?

Ah, forgot Midway, to me the best movie regarding the Pacific War, though "Tora Tora Tora" was pretty good too.

It was kept pretty historically accurate, or perhaps what was the common thought at that time, though "Shattered Sword" has changed some of the thoughts on the battle.

Re: De-Capping Layer

While it is often referred to as a decapping layer or strake, the main function seems to have been to protect the spaces between the side plating and the internal, angled armour belt from splinter damage or hits by light nose fuzed shells, as with the belt now internal, these outer areas were no lo...

Re: Refitting of ships - Armor?

Interesting. I'd like to run the numbers with Okun's formula to see what that comes up with.

It just seems like 3" of additional deck armor would not be enough if you use the square root of additional layers calculation, as this would give in essence 1.72" of additional protection.

Re: Comparisons of Axis vs Allied Combat Vessels

The Japanese battleship Hiei was also badly damaged topside by a combinafion of 5 and 8" hits, leaving her burning and with heavy casualties. She was later crippled by 1 or 2 x 8" shells that flooded part of her machinery. She was indeed rather vulnerable to 8" shells piercing her ar...

Re: De-Capping Layer

From what I gather, the 1/5" de-capping layer of the Iowa class would have a hard time decapping anything above 8", and It's belt should be proof against 8" anyway. Does this seem about right, other than issues with obliquity? And to decap 16" shells, you need .63 meters between ...

Re: Top 10 greatest military leaders of all time

Real tough question, I'm not even going to vote. Too many areas of subjectivity, less knowledge or detail as we go further back in time. We know Roman generals were very good at having those writing about a campaign to also function in essence as the general's PR department. And I am sure the Romans...

Re: Comparisons of Axis vs Allied Combat Vessels

As for Allied ships taking severe damage - one could easily show USS South Dakota (suffering heavy topside damage from 26-27 shells at Guadalcanal, and over 100 casualties), USS Colorado, heavily damaged by 3x150mm shore guns during the Pacific campaign, North Carolina suffering 1xlong lance torped...
