Re: RMS Titanic´s anniversary
Robert: I am not saying that side damage is better than head-on damage. I said that what had to be done was trying to avoid the iceberg, that was the right choice. Titanic is 28 m wide, so as the stem is untouched, I would say that if the bow have turned just 14 m more they would have cleared it: th...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
Thanks, I just found it too (http://members.aol.com/ghe101/A_BASIC_PRIMER_ON_Hull_Shape.htm). So I would say that regardless the lenght/beam ratio (which is two-dimensional) both classes have equally sharp ends. What strikes me, is that your favorite (KGV) has a prismatic of 0.60, and the vaunted Io...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
The prismatic coeficient shows how fine is a hull, regardless of the lenght and beam, the lower the value the finer the ends. That for Bismarck is 0.55 (AOTS). Does anyone have the value for Scharnhorst?

Re: Falklands/Malvinas war naval scenario
I discover today that Belgrano´s max speed was 18 kt, limited because of boilers and reduction gear condition. She was scheduled for a two month refit in March when she was called to duty. Don´t believe that two months would restore her to 30 kt condition, but sending an 18 kt cruiser to war is plai...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
Dunmunro: I know you love the lenght/beam ratio, we have previousy discussed about it. I am not a naval architect, but I have read quiet a lot about ships, and nowhere have ever read that a lower ratio means a slower ship (reasonably close). In fact I am reading the book The search for speed under s...

Re: Falklands/Malvinas war naval scenario
Reading the AWACS article in wiki, I noticed that the radar range is about 375 km (basically the distance to the horizon from 35.000 ft) for low flying aircrat and 560 km to high flying ones. They would have to be "stationed" very close to the islands to be of any utility (in fact patrolli...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
Bismarck is longer, which means a higher hull speed: it would be about 36.65 kt for Scharnhorst and 37.84 for Bismarck. That means less resistance at the same speed.

Re: Falklands/Malvinas war naval scenario
I don´t buy the AWACS theory. The plane would have to fly thru Brazil at least, and that country had friendly relations with Argentina. The same to Uruguay, they wouldn´t let British military to refuel there. And moreover, an E-3 is easily intercepted without escort. I acknowledge the Chilean suppor...

Re: Falklands/Malvinas war naval scenario
If they had an AWACS (which has "look-down" capability) the low level attacks would have been detected, for example against the Sheffield and the Atlantic Conveyor.

Re: Falklands/Malvinas war naval scenario
About the speed capabilities of the old ex-USN ships, I recently read in Conways Fighting Ships that the Belgrano was torpedoed while sailng at 10 kt. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: 2,000 tons of seawater in Bismarck's forecastle!
I would say that multiplying the surface of the compartments by the water depth in them. One cubit meter of water equals about one (metric) ton, which is close to the Imperial ton.

Re: RMS Titanic´s anniversary
I disagree Robert, they have no way of knowing if they would hit or pass, in fact they almost avoided the iceberg, the stem didn't hit ice. They did their best.

Re: RMS Titanic´s anniversary
The witnesses testimonies that described the hull fracturing were dismissed as coming from no expert people. Those of the surviving crew describing the ship going down in one piece were kept.

Re: Falklands/Malvinas war naval scenario
why didn't Admiral Aneya try it? Well, Robert, I think that´s obvious, he didn´t consult me!!! Now, seriously: 1-I don´t know if the old destroyers had the 30 kt dash speed capability. they were almost 40 years old by then and I don´t know the state of boilers and turbines. 2-An operation of that k...
