Re: Photo Quiz # 15

Oberwarrior, that´s an nice looking ship indeed! I envy you for having the opportunity of being there. Regards friend, Thanks Karl, you're welcome ))) http://www.kbismarck.org/photos/2849871375_d253f0bd92.jpg Here is another view of the Kutuzov, I did not upload this for the quiz because the side o...

Re: Pearl Harbor Conspiracy Theory?

...I simply can't believe that a country which was planning to enter the war at the right time, had been building up her military and which had been suffering poor diplomatic relations with japan for years would be so unprepared? ... Why not? The US was still recovering from the depression when it ...

Re: Das Boot Surfacing Scene

I think passive systems such as hydrophones would be used for the initial detection--one listens for something unusual and when that occurs you try to pinpoint it using active pinging. Depth in the Straits is about 300-900m, so at least on the outward voyage a submarine might be able to get below a...

Re: Yamato's last battle: Stunning Japanese movie clip

In what way are people in other countries forced to watch films made for American audiences? Because Hollywood makes lots of films and gets wide distribution because people in other places want to watch them, Hollywood gets criticized. Then we have people who criticize them because they are too rea...

Re: World's worst admiral

Oberwarrior, if Marschall was in Bey's place I think he would have told Donitz that it was essential that Tirpitz be involved in the operation with Scharnhorst. That would have been impossible, and Marschall I believe would have resigned rather than take on something he would be likely to recognise...

Re: Yamato's last battle: Stunning Japanese movie clip

...First as someone who lives in Russia I have seen a number of films made in the Soviet times, however I'm not sure all of them are that dad. .... Have to be careful how we define "bad". For instance I've seen Alexander Nevsky several times and while it's not particularly accurate histor...

Re: Das Boot Surfacing Scene

If I understand correctly, which is to say if memory serves me well, the flow of water into the Med from the Atlantic provides a current at a certain depth which allowed submarines entering the Med submerged to move at 1 to 2 knots without using their E-Motors beyond the occasional need to alter or...

Re: Photo Quiz # 15

Is that a recent photograph? Is the ship still afloat? I took this photograph last year in August when visiting Novorossiysk. Unfortunately I did not get on to the ship despite its museum status because of repair works. Going to Anapa and Novorossiysk again in about a month, so if I get anymore pho...

Re: Pearl Harbor Conspiracy Theory?

Everything that happened has a plausible explanation. Mistakes were made. No one really expected the IJN to attack PH. Obviously they blew it. The Philippines were woefully unprepared as well. It's just an example of poor reading of your potential enemy's capability. I think the sanctions made war ...

Re: Yamato's last battle: Stunning Japanese movie clip

An important point has been made here, for to long Hollywood has made movies about 10 foot tall Americans who shit bullets fighting against firstly the nasty Red Indians, then the dastardly Germans, followed by the evil Soviets. I'm glad Japan has made a film about her own involvement in World war ...

Re: Pearl Harbor Conspiracy Theory?

You might very well be right, but I'm not sure if you point is objective, as you list historian for occupation I was merely pointing out that the conditions of the POW camps during the Civil War were a matter of public record even during the war itself, with the Society of Friends and the Mennonite...

Re: Pearl Harbor Conspiracy Theory?

I believe the maltreatment, intentional or otherwise of POWs in some camps, ie Andersonville, Rock Island, Elmira and such have been common knowlege since the Civil War. There really has not been a cover up of the state of things, and the record has been open for anyone who cares to take a look. I ...
