Re: The CVE in WW2-was it a real asset??
The escort carriers were definitely of value for the US. They were able to do what they needed, and in what they were able to accomplish in the Atlantic alone they were well worth their weight, as it freed fleet carriers from the duty of ASW warfare. They did sink easier, it seems half were lost fro...

Re: De-Capping Layer
One thing about these penetration values - is a "common" shell a little sturdier and does it have a bit less of an explosive filler than a "common" shell? I'd be curious as to the bursting charge as a percentage of weight on common types compared to high explosive rounds. I guess...

Japanese vs US AA capabilities
This is one of the areas of the Pacific War where the Japanese ran a far second from the US AA capability. And when I say AA capability, I not only mean what amount and the accuracy of shells that could be put into the air, but also the effects of these shells upon enemy planes, causing the durabili...

Re: De-Capping Layer
It appears to me, that Nathan Okuns calculation potentially underestimates the explosive effect of HE shells, as it is in contradiction to the findings of say german (non systematic) tests. Not a shock to me. Okun has done so much research, and has done it rather well, so much that too often IMO he...

Re: Why was USN cruiser shooting so poor?
Hate to cast any rain on the parade, Aurora :D But I'd like to point out that Japan was by far worse than Allied nations when it came to ASW. They actually had a decent amount of escorts, contrary to popular belief, and their sonar was not bad. But they lacked a fair amount of things 1) Unlike the U...

Re: De-Capping Layer
So per Okun, it would need a 7.5" HE or Common round to penetrate.

Re: De-Capping Layer
Thorsten - I was thinking of a direct hit. IIRC, Nathan Okun, stated nose-fuzed projectile would penetrate 0.2 calibers of homogeneous ductile plate or 0.3 calibers of a face-hardened plate. So 1.5" of face hardened plate takes a 5" shell to penetrate. Was the STS Belt face hardened? If no...

Re: Comparisons of Axis vs Allied Combat Vessels
Also, in post war US testing against an Iowa size faceplate the British 14" shell tended to deform and ricochet off of thick armor because of the thin walls they accepted in order to get the large (for the caliber) explosive filler. Interesting. In comparison to the US 16"/45 the British ...

Re: De-Capping Layer
I'm not sure of the arrangement of the 2 layers of void and 2 layers of liquid, but even if the outer layer is liquid it is still a hull breech, hardly what one is wanting. The outer layers of the TDS are liquid filled in the Iowas. What exactly is going to be flooded?

Re: World best soldiers ever
I think one huge thing that has to be taken into account is the "size" of the unit we are speaking of in comparison to the size of the army. My point being is man for man, Leonidas' 300 man personal guard was probably as good as any unit in history from a morale state. But it is only a sma...

Re: De-Capping Layer
Any holes or cracks in the plate above the waterline can still cause progressive flooding if they become submerged, as in the case of a ship which has developed a list. That is what I though, one of the deficiencies in the Iowa class armor scheme. The outer layer from what I can see was not really ...

Re: Comparisons of Axis vs Allied Combat Vessels
I can't get facehard to run on my computer anymore for some reason. But per Navweaps, the 14" POW gun Penetrates 15.6" at 10,000 yards. And that's for a dead on hit, we are looking at least at a at a 20 degree incline, plus the descent angle of any shot. I'd think it would be tough to pene...

Re: Rodney torpedoes compared to Long Lance?
On 27 September 1941, Nelson's port torpedo station almost proved to be a liability when an Italian air-launched 18" torpedo holed the compartment behind the torpedo body room causing 3,750 tons of water to enter the vessel. Following this the Nelson's torpedo capability was said by one refere...

Re: Rodney torpedoes compared to Long Lance?
I have corresponded with Joseph Czarnecki and consider him rather more than highly biased. His entire argument in this article of his is based upon a perceived Japanese "failure" to meet their pre-war estimated hit percentages in a series of engagements that never involved the types of ta...
