Re: What If Bismarck Had Escaped?
Ok Bismarck makes Brest,....gets repaired(And by some wild chance is not damaged by RAF attacks),And makes it back to germany with the twins in a channel dash, say early 42, about feb.(thats a lot of luck),that puts the German capital ships all together, now lets say that after 6 months working up tog...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
To phil,I was not trying to be a smart-arse............but the standard naval doctrine of the time(British,US,french, german) for use of destroyers against battleships was to stand off and shadow till heavy units could intercept and engage....then when said battleship was damage enough.....To launch ...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
hi again ,,,,,ok first reply to Bgile, your statement that torps were the main armament of destroyers.I would agree that torps were the main weapon destroyers used for sinking enemy ships,But were not classed as their main armament ,and you are correct about not using their guns at night in a surpris...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
Still on the idea of attacking a battleship/battle cruiser with torps fired from destroyers/light cruisers. With its main guns destroyed and other damage is tough enough,BUT attacking a FULLY operational battleship/battle cruiser in a torp attack(destroyers/Lt cruisers)has got to be about the toughes...

Re: How did you come to be interested in Bismarck?
my interest in the bismarck came from my father,(he was ex-australian navy)and told me the story of the bismarck when i was about 7 or 8 years old,i think the one thing about the bismarck legend that grabs hold of people,Is the fact that ONE ship(bismarck)would put such fear into a nation(Britain)as...

Re: Bismarck: Scuttled or Sunk?
hi everyone,as to the debate on whether the( british sunk the bismarck or bismarcks crew scuttled her),This debate will always rage on.there can be NO DOUBT the royal navy action DESTROYED the bismarck as a fighting ship.It would be a closer call i think, to say that bismarck was destroyed by the ro...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
i have a small problem with some of the range finder info on Bismarck, and on pow ,and Rodney,so far i have found 2 diff rangefinders for the bismarck and 3 for the rodney and 2 for the POW,i thought all the KGV class ships had the same rangefinders,,,,,did rodney have different rangefinders to the n...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
in answer to yellowtail and company,i was not saying POW or HOOD guns were not powerful enough to damage Bismarck, what i said was that BISMARCKS guns had a greater range than the british ships and bismarck had a speed advantage over the british battleships(not the battlecruisers).and that having a s...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
it is not surprising that 60+years on,the armchair admirals would be out in force,,here is a INDISPUTABLE fact about the bismarck.SHE WAS THE ONLY BATTLESHIP OF THE WAR THAT DID EXACTLY AS SHE WAS DESIGNED TO DO...TO GO OUT AND ENGAGE CAPITAL SHIPS(BB,BC)OF A ENEMY FLEET AND SINK BY HEAVY GUNFIRE)NO...
