Re: HMS Prince of Wales - Lost and now Found

If I had to make a shape out of that I'd say the white area at the bottom left of the yellow box is the bow and to the left you have the fore and main masts, but that's obviously not her and the shape you have focused on looks nothing like a part of any warship I've ever seen.

Re: Iowas instead of POW and Repulse

Interesting. They certainly would have knocked down more planes. More, and generally better guns, as well as the most effective AA fire control. They were also considerably more maneuvreable than the British ships. Stll, I'd rather take bombs with them than torps, as their underwater protection lef...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?

If the Prinz Eugen stayed with the Bismarck and he still got the (un)lucky hit on his rudder would the Prinz have been able to provide a tow for the bismarck if he appiled a cerain amount of power to the screw to try and lessen the effect of the jammed rudder?

Re: Sea State in the Denmark Strait 24.5.41

As a watch keeper with the whole day off, I enjoyed the spectacle and took to the motion as if it were a wonderful long fairground ride. When it was heavy weather we used to stand in the NAAFI flat and when the ship was coming down off a big wave we'd jump up and try and hang onto the support beams...

Agreed, this thread is getting quite unseemly now. perhaps a good time to let it rest.

Re: Bismarck vs. Rodney: hand to hand?

No no, Not on the 27th of May :) The topic and my answer concerns Bismarck and Rodney ALONE, in a normal battle. Yeah got that, but still Battleships are still difficult to sink by gunfire alone, thats why I'm asking why Rodney would be sunk in such a short space of time. The POW is mentioned as th...

Really?

I thought battelships were difficult to sink with gunfire alone, how is it that Bismarck would've made such easy work of HMS Rodney and HMS Prince of Wales?

Re: How did you come to be interested in Bismarck?

To be honest I’d always hated the Bismarck and her crew. I served in the Royal Navy and knew his story from my own reading pretty well, to me he was the ship that sent HMS Hood and 1,400+ men to their deaths. Of course as I got older I stopped thinking in black and white and realised that as evil as...

Re: Rescue Operations After Bismarck's Sinking

I'd imagine the adrenaline rush the survivors were expiriencing would be incredible. I'd also imagine that a few hours later they'd come down and were very quiet indeed.

Re: Tovey's decision not to attack at the evening of 26th

I don't doubt for one second that Tovey would've engaged with just KGV on her own if the Bismarck was heading for home at speed, if that's what it took. I also don't doubt that the pilots on Ark Royal wouldn't have wanted to deliver another airstrike, weather be dammed. I've also noticed that sinkin...

Yamato Instead of Kirishima 13th Nov 1942

As we all know the Kirishima was sunk by the USS Washington while she was engaged with the USS South Dakota, South Dakota ended up badly damaged but survived. What would've happened if it was Yamato there instead of Kirishima? Would the Yamato have sunk the South Dakota in short order, would the new...

Re: POW Gets Her Turrets Working Again

Slightly altering the scenario now, what would've happened if in the evening exchange POW scored a lucky hit that disabled the Bismarck's rudder like the swordfish attack? Would POW, Norfolk & Suffolk engage straight away or stand off until more ships and/or aircraft arrived?

HMS Anson vs USS Washington

Hi all
Who do we think would win between the two? both ships have the same speed, and roughly the same displacement. Obviously Washington had a bigger main armament, but I'm not sure about armour(still learning about the verious thicknesses, angle steel types etc).

Re: POW Gets Her Turrets Working Again

Gentlemen, An interesting senario. If Pow had got all her guns fully fuctional after a few minutes I really cannot see a British battleship refusing to re-engage to have done so would almost certainly have ended in a court martial for her captain. Churchill wanted to do this even after knowing abou...
