Re: Germans in WWII having Iowa class battleships
The amount of resources needed to build 4 Iowas would put a huge dent in German U-Boat production, so the Royal Navy wouldn't need to build nearly as many corvettes/escorts which would in turn free up plenty of material to construct more capital ships and plenty more getting through in convoys. Woul...

Re: Germans in WWII having Iowa class battleships
What would the RN be doing in the 2+ years that it would take for the Germans to build an Iowa? Building the Yamato's big brother perhaps?

Re: Another Bismarck sortie
KGV & POW to counter BS, Hood, Repulse & Norfolk to counter the twins, Suffolk & Dorsetshire to counter PE, Victorious against Graf Zepplin. That is entirely contingent on the German forces being located and the RN being able to intercept - rather more difficult than when just one Germa...

Re: Another Bismarck sortie
Personaly I think this would be a bad idea. If all the Kreigsmarine capital ships sailed in a task force then I'd imagine it would be easier for the Royal Navy to counter than the twins and BS/PE/GZ operating independantly. The RN would be well aware of what was going on and would have the ships in...

Re: Another Bismarck sortie
I think a scenario like this would be the best chance the RN would get to sink all four Kreigsmarine capital ships in 1 go possibly throughout the whole war and would've thrown everything, including numerous kitchen sinks at them. They would be aware of all four capital ships arriving at the same p...

Re: Another Bismarck sortie
Forgot to add Rodney and possibly Berwick. But Rodney was in convoy duty, and doing 22kts. She couldn't be used in a decisive confrontation on the 24th. As the real scenario showed, the Home Fleet could not know exactly where the German raiding force would cross into the Atlantic, thus needing to p...

Re: Another Bismarck sortie
HM ships KGV, POW, Hood, Ruplse, Victorious, Norfolk, Suffolk, Dorsetshire and the escorting destoryers. the escorting destroyers would remain far behind - this happened to Hood and PoW. Some ships would be needed to scout ahead (probably Norfolk and Suffolk), thus leaving a smaller total task forc...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Hello everybody, Im my mind, and I think for any Officer, that was a " turning point ". If you had no confidence on your warship efficiency you should have taken a " strong " position there and NOT accept the readiness declaration with all related personal consequences. He did i...

Re: Sinking of HMS Glowworm
I have always thought that was one of the most amazing and admirable actions of WW II, and would make a great painting! There was (might still be there) a really impressive painting or drawing of the action at HMS Dryad. This is it, although I seem to remember it being in black & white only htt...

Re: Yamato Instead of Kirishima 13th Nov 1942
What would've happened if it was Yamato there instead of Kirishima? My guess would be... about the same thing, except that Yamato might have survived. She would have made a bigger hole in SD with her one (?) main battery hit, requiring more repair time. Yamato, soaking up ten or so 16" shells,...

Re: Bismarck vs. Rodney: hand to hand?
Travelling across the Atlantic in December 1941, Captain Charles Lambe saw deficiencies in the crew of the ship: ...60% of the ship's company have never been to sea before{emphasis mine-Dan}. The proportion of RNR and RNVR officers is very high. They are a shapeless lot somehow and there is none of...

Re: Scharnhorst Vs a KGV
The niveau of this forum is realy sinking, I wanted to write a lot in this thread, but after the last posts here, thiis the same german bashing on unsubstained claims and lies as at the Navyweapons forum. You are joking right? It seems to me that reading some of the posts on here that the Royal Nav...

Beauty & the Beast
Yes I am of course talking about a Littorio against the Bismarck. On a clear, calm, sunny day. Both have a well trained crew and the problem with the Italian shells has been resolved. From what I can tell Bismarck is better armoured but I know the 15/50cal on the Littorio class is supposed to be the...
