Re: Perforation of armor plate, 15" and 16" guns

Where they 16" guns deployed in Norway or in France? If the latter, did they actually fire, e.g. during D-Day? Ah - I think I remember now, - "Batterie Lindemann", right ?

Cheers

Re: Perforation of armor plate, 15" and 16" guns

But there never was a german ship with the german 16" gun, so this thought is a bit academic...

Re: The end of Scharnhorst

Gentlemen, As usual many thanks for all your informed replies, although I am still puzzled about the lack of hits at that range compared with Rodney v Bismarck at a similar range, so the questions are these,1) Was the sea that much rougher at North Cape and 2) Were the most number of hits actually ...

Re: Force Z

Gentlemen, Having read a couple of books on the sinking of Pow & Repulse I cannot help but to think that the whole set up was a monumental mistake. To send one of your latest Battleships and an elderly Battlecruiser out to the far east in the vain hope that the Japanese would be overawed by the...

Re: The end of Scharnhorst

But JW55B was also protected by a strong destroyer escort. Without (or maybe even with) her 5 destroyers, Scharnhorst would have a hard time fighting both the destroyers, the convoy, and any remaining cruisers. In my point of view, even without Ultra, Operation Ostfront was doomed from the start. Po...

Re: Force Z

I remember reading somewhere that Tovey opposed the idea of sending a KGV to the Pacific because of some specific shortcomings of the ventilation system with regard to the higher water/air temperatures compared to the North Atlantic. I don't remember what exactly was his concern, but it seemed like ...

Re: Manfred Rommel has died.

Yes of course it mentions he was the son of the desert fox. But that is the only thing - there is no further comment on the relations to his father or events in WW2. According to the article, Manfred Rommel was well respected across all political camps. Interesting side note, he endorsed the burial ...

Re: Manfred Rommel has died.

The article does not mention Erwin Rommel at all. It focuses on Manfred Rommel only, mentioning that he was a highly respected local politician.

Your favourite Battleship

Do you have a personal favourite, and if yes, why? I'm not talking about the "best" or "strongest" BS, just which one do you feel most affected to ? For me, it are the KGV's. I know they were probably the weakest of all new (1930ies+) designs, and that they had many shortcomings....

Re: About the Bodies

Well, of course nobody is able to predict inventions of the future. However, the entire science of imaging, be it sub-surface or medical, be it with seismic waves or EM waves like radar or X-rays, has made a continuous development. The reason why medical imaging produces high-resolution 3D images ha...

Re: About the Bodies

Maybe development of something akin to ground penetrating radar could be developed to gain a non intrusive 'picture' / outline will be our only chance for any limited analysis. No. Ground penetrating radar, or any similar device based on reflected waves, will always suffer from complicated 3D struc...

Re: O Class Battlecruisers

As it can be read in G&D, the three planned ships of this class (O,P,Q) led to the nickname "Ohne Panzer Quatsch" in the german navy. "Ohne Panzer Quatsch" means "Makes no sense without armour".

Re: O Class Battlecruisers

I would say it was a weak design - much too weak armour for such an expensive vessel. And what would have been the benefit of a battlecruiser in the time of fast battleships? Designing a battlecruiser in 1940 was definitely going in the wrong direction.

Ahem. "so very possibly Lutjens was already looking at the wider picture and adapting his tactics to that overall strategy. " How can one really believe that Lutjens planned his tactics based on the World Situation report, and if they could listen to that in Bismarck anyway? How can one ca...

Re: Lutjens' Intentions

I think it is known that the heavy manoeuvring during Victorious aircraft's attack led to dismantling the temporarily welded plates in the bow, so I doubt that the holes were permanently fixed one day after that!
