Re: Bismarck's engine spaces

I believe they were licensed copies of Parsons and Curtis wheel turbines. What would be interesting is the reported automatic settings control systems. Instead of having someone controlling manual controls, it is reported that the controlling was via a automated system. To answer my original questio...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

If I may you are assuming that GK-DOS 100 document is accurate if it's assumptions on foreign battleships particulars. I believe that there is serious questions of accuracy as the penetration curves were infact based on assumptions. Looking at the figures in column titled Hell condition seems to to ...

modern naval design princples

I have completed many years of studying the defunct battleship design principles and during this time I have been distracted from time to time by the question of what principle is used in modern naval ships? Usually because it was clear that in the advent of a shooting war there would be significant...

Re: Bismarck's engine spaces

Thank you something to start with, although there seems to be a lack of detail in company websites of historical designs from that period from German companies, I will see if anything comes up.

Re: War time drydock construction in Germany

Yeh your right about the multi-faceted nature of facist ideology. There was the political ideology that appealed to German sense of order, and productivity, their racist policies that appealed to the greater part of Europe, even if most Europeans would deny it, and the overriding nature of the main ...

Re: How did you come to be interested in Bismarck?

My interest started some 35 years ago. Military service was pretty big interest for me as both my parents were army brats and I considered it a bit of a family tradition. From the age of 5 we lived on my grandpa's farm, by 6 years old I was proficient and accurate marksman, ( my father's idea of tea...

Re: War time drydock construction in Germany

Now let see. Poor productivity lacking in skill yet the Japanese completed multiple port up grades to their naval bases and oh yes by and by finished two of the largest battleships in under three years, and a economy 9% that of the USA. And oh yes managed to fumble their way across the Pacific ocean...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?

In response to Dave saxton points. With the the weather been bad as it was, a reasonable chances of slipping thru would have been expected. Advances in radar performance on the allied side made this almost impossible. It is not reasonable to expect Lutjen to be aware of this. ( be careful of 20/20 h...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?

This is the wonderful thing about a debate, two post talking about the same thing with completely opposed opinions. One thing he did not rush into battle at Denmark straits, he hesitated. Like should he turn back and fight a running battle to the north, should he continue and fight as he did? My int...

Re: War time drydock construction in Germany

The similarities between the preparations of German docks is striking similar in it scope to the Japanese upgrades under taken to operate Yamato class. Is this simply due to size of the H39 series or were there plans that early on to increase the size of subsequent classes? I think will check on the...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?

No nothing like that. The 'article' I read suggested that he and his family had been initially successful in hiding it when the Nazi came to power, but at some point during the war he thought discovery was close to occurring. How or why this ties up with the explaining his performances at sea was ne...

Re: Hit that knocked out A&B turrets

Further to art work the Baron's description of hit from Rodney indicates A turret was hit not B turret. Thought he had similar art work in his book, but I was incorrect in that assumption. Only description that is reflected in line drawing above

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?

The first part about Lutjen is right on the money! Why did he seem to 'go completely of the reservation' as it were ? This question is the crux of the whole point to this question; I suspect if I looked into what exactly grabbed my interest in the Bismarck's story, this question of WHY? did it for m...

Re: Hit that knocked out A&B turrets

A couple of observations that may clarify the question. 1./While there were no survivors from that part of the ship, the escape path for several survivors was the forward command and bridge areas. Their accounts shed some light on conditions forward. 2./ The image displays no hits on B turret, only ...
