Re: Practical ranges

A, nice info Still, it appears that only a 3 or 4 hits were made > 20km, the others coming after the twins had closed the range quite a bit, at 15km or so. IIRC, Hoffman was criticised on return for wasting expensive ammunition... This objection is strange, if you look at the cost of a capital ship...

Re: What was the most effective naval anti-aircraft gun of W

How did the system you mention above couple the range as found by the Radar to the FCS? Type 280 and type 279 both had a precision ranging panel which transmitted the radar range AND range rate directly to the HACS table (computer) via magslips (syncro motors) with power follow-up for the range rat...

Re: What was the most effective naval anti-aircraft gun of W

"All the major navies had AA FC systems that could shoot down aircraft."They were just not nearly as effective as those on American ships late in the war. Be careful to not overstate your case. Note: While the Army was beginning to demonstrate excellent AA fire, the Navy’s performance wit...

Re: What was the most effective naval anti-aircraft gun of W

Our philosophy was that the shell had to perforate the target intact before detonation, something that could not be guaranteed with the German shell, even against the very thin aircraft skins of WW-II! Any even cursory examination of damage pics from then would show many partial detonations, or fai...

Re: Practical ranges

... And Oldendorf's battleships opened at 22000 yards, or 20km, during the night, with radar-ranged salvos, scoring hits in the first salvos. Above 25km, depending on the gun, either dispersion is to large, or the angle of fall becomes to steep, and danger space is to small to consistently hit an o...

Re: torpedo penetration

thank you so if no delay a torpedo working ok would explode right after contact with hull outside the ship. ok. but wouldnt a torpedo dud that weights more than a ton and hits a thin shellplate at 45 knots be able to make at least hole? just thinking. It is absolutely possible for a dud torpedo to ...

Re: Explosion of shells

Gentlemen, Thre have been reports of ships firing their heavy guns into the water against low flying aircraft, presumably trying to get the splash to bring them down, if this is true, would those shells have exploded or just skipped accross the water like a stone on a pond due to the low angle at w...

Re: Armor Thickness – lbs and Inches

I think that there is a number rounding issue here: a 1 foot square 1 inch thick plate doesn´t weight exactly 40 pounds, but 40.85 pounds, taking a metric density of 7.86 for the steel. So a plate 1 foot square which WEIGHTS 40 pounds, is not 1 inch thick but a little less, 25 mm for the same densi...

Re: WWII Iowa Class' Stability, Seakeeping, Structural Stren

Okay I know I dwell into expert territory here, but as an amateur ship simmer (I use Rick Robinson's Spring Style and Spring Sharp), I have a problem simming a correct Iowa (whereas I have no problem simming anything else), and maybe I get get some tips here. Using data collected here and there on ...

Re: What was the most effective naval anti-aircraft gun of W

It matters little what type of gun is used, it IS the fire control system that makes the big difference! Search for pictures of 20 MM guns. Some have huge bulky sighting systems and other have a ring and bead. Look at 40 mm quads, some have radar dishes and others do not. Which type do you think wi...

Re: What was the most effective naval anti-aircraft gun of W

I wonder how these shells maintained structural integrity against the accelerations required for such high MVs? In all applications I know of for the M-Geschoss they never cut down the mv. Rather contrary, in smaller guns (f.e.20mm and 30mm range) the adoption of the M-Geschoss, which was a bit lig...

Re: What was the most effective naval anti-aircraft gun of W

The 1st Lancaster attack on Sept 15 1944 was with Tirpitz still in Kaa Fjord. The attack consisted of 27 Lancasters. German radar detected the attack in plenty of time, but requests for fighters amounted to nothing. Becauase the attack was detected so early, by the time the bombers got close enough...

Re: What was the most effective naval anti-aircraft gun of W

IIRC, they dropped 18-19 Tallboys and got one hit and 1-2 near misses? One of the bombs landed over a mile away, again IIRC. If only those three planes would have been shot down, the Tirpitz would have been unscathed? The ability of Radar directed medium caliber guns shooting proximity fused shell ...

Re: Problems with tonnage and displacement

This maybe seem ridiculous but there is something I don't get here. While studying the characteristic of several ships I came to notice the ambiguity of some terminology and now I am confused. Let's see: displacement is the measure of water displaced by the ship. And tonnage or weight is the actual...
