The bowspirite referred to is actually an extendable boom which is underwater (Ausfahreinrichtung für Stenge Bugschutzgerät), and it appears in drawings of Bismarck in von Müllenheim-Rechbergs book. It is also in plans of Scharnhorst and Hipper Classes. It is a boom which can be extended from a tub...

Ulrich, I wasn't aware of that report. I have checked this out and noticed that Müllenheim-Rechberg actually lists the document you mention in the bibliography used for his book, which is one of the best documented and researched of all. It is listed as: Naval High Command (Oberkommando der Kriegsma...

No yellow at the beginning of Rheinübung. Yellow was only applied (if ever) in the morning of 26 May 1941 with the Bismarck in the Atlantic heading for France. The top of the turrets (flat and sloped plates) was painted dark grey in Hamburg during the winter of 1940-41 and remained like that until M...

Bismarck Memorial in Friedrichsruh

Hello everyone, These photos of the Battleship Bismarck Memorial in Friedrichsruh, Germany, were taken for us by Timothy P. Mulligan on May 20, 2005. The Memorial site is located just behind the mausoleum that holds the sarcophagi of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and his wife Johanna von Puttkammer. ...

The Bismarck fired 93 x 38cm shells in the Denmark Strait scoring 4 hits on the Prince of Wales and at least 1 on the Hood. The Prinz Eugen scored a similar number of hits (3 hits on POW and at least 1 on Hood) but fired 179 x 20.3cm shells. The Prince of Wales fired 18 salvos with the fore turrets ...

Hello Paul, The new duplex (magnetic) pistols were used against Sheffield, and later replaced by contact pistols for the final strike on the Bismarck. The torpedo that disabled Bismarck's rudders had a contact pistol. As for Victorious Swordfish, I am not sure about it, but you might be right about ...

Just a quick note. All the torpedoes launched at the Bismarck by the Swordfish on 24 and 26 May, had contact detonators. Magnetic detonators were used on the first air strike launched from the Ark Royal at 1450 hours on 26 May. This attack, however, turned out to be a failure since the Swordfish att...

Sure. It is a cross sectional drawing in 1:100 scale of the battleship Tirpitz (Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven in July 1941) scanned for us by our Polish friend Miroslav Skwiot and originally from Breyer. I believe copies of the complete original set are available at the Bundesarchiv/Militärarchiv....

Bill, Tommy, I'm not sure what defect you are talking about in the side protection system. Could you please attach a cross section drawing for us to see? Thank you. If I understood this correctly the red arrow in the cross section below marks the place Bill is talking about. http://kbismarck.org/ph...

I think, I previously misunderstood this message. It was asking about the salvo exchange and not about Bismarck's rudder failure. Sorry about that. According to ADM 234-509: H.M.S. Suffolk Operations 23-26 May 1941 http://www.hmshood.org.uk/reference/official/adm234/adm234-509suff.html , the Suffolk...

Müllenheim-Rechberg does somehow mention this incident on his book: "It now developed that the jolts caused by the firing of our big guns had put our forward radar out of action and, since the Bismarck was in the lead, our task force was blind to any threat from ahead. In order to overcome this...
