Re: Battleship Vanguard Armor
Hi Dave sorry about the type-o. I meant to say the deck. Although this may have reduced damaged stability. Have you seen the config on the G3s. What do you think.

Re: 38 cm shells
Sorry forgot to add, at the range in question ie 13700 yards, the relative velocities of the projectiles in question are, 541.8 mps (1774 fps) for the British 723.5 kg (1595 pound) projectile and 565 mps (1853 fps) for the American 680.6kg (1500 pound) projectile. Now if you use the equation 1/2mv2 ...

Re: 38 cm shells
To Thorsten Wahl. The test in question was conducted at the U.S. Proving grounds. As I don't think they actually shipped an entire British gun over they would have performed the test in an American gun with more than likely identical charges, since it is the same chamber, probably even using the sam...

Re: 38 cm shells
Found an amazing web site called Bismarck battle film analysis. An actual film of the battle that has been authenticated and would strongly recommend you guys look it up. It shows a number of things, namely Bismarck firing her forward turrets at intervals of 25 and 27.5 sec during the battle and tha...

Re: Plunging fire
The German cap was a fair bit heavier than its British counterparts. I would find it very unlikely that they would have used old ww1 armor in tests since the newer armor had been around for some time by them. However could it be that the German figures were correct (especially regarding German tradi...

Re: 38 cm shells
Hi Paul, I got the info from Axis and neutral battleships of WW2, which gives quite a facinating and well researched account of the battle. It refers to Hood being struck by the 4th salvo, but I know other sources quote the 5th salvo.

Brittle Fracture and torpedo resistance
I found this rather interesting statement in the the book "Introduction to engineering materials" it reads. "Mild steel is ductile at low strain rates at all temperatures above a value of about -170 deg C, but when mild steel is subjected to impact loading conditions the transition fr...

Re: Battleship Vanguard Armor
She looks to me like a beautifully balanced design, which incorporated many improvements over KGV that made her greater than the sum of the individual parts and far better. She was a better sea boat as well as faster and better able to absorb damage(damaged stability was rather good), never mind qui...

Re: 38 cm shells
Thank you Paul for your well researched info. Just wanted to add or point out the potential value of rapid fire capability within an actual battle. The question I would like to ask is was Bismarck firing full 8 gun salvos or was was she ranging with only 4 at a time? The other thing was that once th...

Re: 38 cm shells
Would like to point a few things out , but thankyou very much for your input. The Japanese did copy from British sources, but as I understand it that was circa ww1. I would find it highly unlikly that they would reveal or give top secret information away that would drastically improve their armor. A...

Re: 38 cm shells
Done a little more research as to the comparative armor resistance of American versus British and German armor. Post war tests of the British and 14 inch 1595 pound projectile versus the American 14 inch Mark 16 1500 pound projectile showed that the american shell was better at oblique impacts, but ...

Re: 38 cm shells
Just like to show a quick comparison between armor piercing caps of different navies. The Bismarck had 112.5 kg cap weight for its armor piercing shells compared to 84 kg for that used by Richelieu.

Re: 38 cm shells
Hello everyone, thanks for your input. I have to apologize for the bad punctuation and rather lengthy opening "paragraph". I would first like to just show a quick comparison between the penetrative capabilities of the German and British guns of equal caliber. Note that I'm not using the ol...

38 cm shells
I've done a lots research and have found out some very interesting details about the 38 cm shells used aboard Bismark. First of all, they used a much heavier armour piercing cap than anyone else (at least 50% heavier for their full armour piercing). This had some quite startling differences to the s...
