Re: The Court Martial for the Denmark Strait
Gents, I'm sorry that I fuelled the dispute, since I do not appreciate those unkindly words, that will eventualy sink this forum. By the way, no offense Alberto, but I don't see your point. Please correct me if I misunderstand you, but it seems to me that you say RADM Walke-Walker and Captain Leach'...

Re: The Court Martial for the Denmark Strait
Gents, I do not want to get stuck in this never ending discussion, and I don't neither want to offense anyone, but I'm a bit surprised by the following sentence: his decision (as well as Wake-Walker's decision not to re-engage) was just perfect and this is why no further action was taken to punish h...

Re: Hitting the Gun Barrel
I guess you probably know, but in doubt, I precise: as far as I know, Richelieu's missing barrel was not destroyed by an ennemy shell, but by the explosion of a projectile inside the barrel.

Antonio But if one suddendly appears on a thread that never saw him writing before, ... in the middle of a discussion, ... I was expecting a value add from his post, ... and not only a side taken without even the reason for it to be. At least now I know why. You are right that I did not participate ...

Re: Wake-Walker : To engage or not to engage ?
Hello everybody, @ Francis Marliere, Where is your value add here now ? Do you know how to use a ruler measuring the above map distances ? My very good friends Philippe Caresse and Robert Dumas both knows how to do it, are French and are in line with me, so what ? I will avoid to list all the other...

Re: Wake-Walker : To engage or not to engage ?
You have also been opposed by Americans, Canadians, Germans and Jamaicans(?) Have I left anyone out? Fair point. Would you mind adding French member ? Moreover, I would like to point out that as a French, I am not inclined to defend Britain or the Royal Navy at all cost, quite the contrary. ...

Amphibious operations
Gentlemen, I have some questions about amphibious operations (just the landing, not assault, which is even more complicated). I assume that not all beaches are suited for a landing. What is the minimum size and maximum slope for the beaching of a small craft (LCVP, LCM, LCT) ? Same question for a LS...

I'm talking about chemical smoke during a 'typical' night, without illumination.

Re: Martini Henry rifles
As fars as I understand things, US Infantry still had single shot rifles at this time : only cavalry units had Spencer carbines. The reasons why infantry did not have carbines are IMHO : - carbines are muche more expensives than rifles ; - the ammunition consumption of carbines is too high ; - the r...

Re: Cover up synopsis
I let you and Alberto to discuss about the 203 mm ( 8 inches ) guns effectiveness when engaged against battleships, since this is NOT the argument in discussion on this thread. Antonio, you miss my point. I am not getting involved in the 'cover up' discussion, but was just making a short comment ab...

Re: Cover up synopsis
I'm afraid that PG opened fire at 5:55 on Hood from over 20000 yards. She hit the British flagship before Bismarck, at 5:57 from a range of around 19000 yards, igniting the ready to use AA ammo and causing the famous fire on the boat deck. Other hits on Hood are not officially confirmed, but possib...

Re: Cover up synopsis
Alberto, no offense, but we disagree on this subject. I do think their fire from effective range can well contribute to the enemy defeat Alberto, as far as I know, the RN CA were at best at 10 nm, which is long range rather than effective range for these ships. as it certainly did Prinz Eugen at Den...
