Re: Kitakami and Oi

Back in my college days (mid 80s), I was part of a naval wargaming group. One day we ran a Solomons-type scenario with the IJN having 1 KONGO-class BB, 1 CA, OI and 1 other CL, with about 4 DDs. The USN had WASHINGTON, 1 CA, 1 BROOKLYN-class CL, 1 SAN DIEGO-class CL, and 4 DDs. The scenario ended qu...

Re: Bismarck against BB-57 South Dakota

I believe that it really comes down to the range at which the fight occurs. If the range is out to the point where SoDak's shells are plunging, Bismarck is toast. If the shells are at a flat trajectory, it is a bloodbath battle with SoDak having a SLIGHTLY better chance of limping away victorious.

Kitakami and Oi

What would the results have been if those two had ever gotten involved with the surface actions around the Solomons? Would they have been the fleet killers that they were designed to be, or would they have been supremely vulnerable to single hits causing catastrophic explosions of their torps?

Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History

Had to go with Salamis because of the number of vessels and the consequences.

Tsushima and Midway were the most decisive actions, and the consequences of Drake vs the Armada were also high, but they don't match Salamis overall.

Okay, so one way or the other they were visible at the time of the sinking. Question answered. Thanx.

Re: Nimitz Class Sunk?

Well, there are a few nuclear powered submarines on the seabed right now. USS Thresher comes to mind. I don't believe there are any problems associated with her.

Re: Final Paint Scheme

In the photographs of the wreck, the swastika on the deck, for aerial identification, is still visible, but according to: http://www.kbismarck.com/drawings.html drawing #5 shows that they were painted over prior to the departure from Norway. But pictures of the stern of the wreck here: http://www.bi...

Land based "Nell" bombers, half equipped as torpedo bombers. The Buffalo fighters that were supposed to cover them didn't launch early enough to be on scene.

Re: Photo Quiz #3

Someone who knows carrier history shouldn't have had any problems with that one, with the Spanish Navy flag at the forejack, and the Harriers on deck. They only had Dedalo. Nice photo. Too bad she met her end in south Texas.

I'm new here, but I'd suggest the ability to upload an avatar from our own computers instead of just from the gallery provided. I'd like to use the one that I have at allmilitary.com

Final Paint Scheme

According to the KBismarck site, the swastikas on the deck fore and aft were painted over before she saided from Norway. The images of the wreck show them clearly NOT painted over. Did they repaint the decks while running for Brest?
