Strangest ship misidentification
Hi guys. What would be for you the strangest cases of ships misidentified by flying crews? Neosho already mentioned. Any destroyer taken as BB?

Re: Essex class carrier flying deck
Hi. I would like to know the structure of the flying deck. From the AOTs I know that the hangar deck is 2.5" thick, and that the flying deck was made of plating covered by wood. What would be the thickness of the underlying plates and of the wood? Thanks in advance. The flight deck was 8lb ( ....

Re: Identify indicator
It depends. It's possible to stop the shaft by the turbine and then clamp it by a brake. This brake would work up to about 15 knots. The coupling on Scharnhorst and Bismarck could be coupled while shaft and turbine were running. There was an synchronized revolutions indicator to determine the right...

Re: Identify indicator
Well, there were two different designs of the shaft decoupling. A simple one with removing bolts from the flanges (Nassau- and Bayern-class for example) and a more sophisticated one (Scharnhorst- and Bismarck-class for example). The building regulations for the simple design defined the shape and m...

Re: Identify indicator
Hi! I took a look at my AOTS volumes, Dreadnought, Hood and Warspite. Can not find any unclutching device. Only a shaft locking mechanism is mentioned. Presumably the RN used to lock the shafts when the turbines were not in use.

Re: Identify indicator
It's the coupling indicator of the thrust blocks of the three shafts. I assume the lamps indicate "coupled", "coupling" and "decoupled". Hi Marc, Do you have any info how the coupling/decoupling was done? I hope this helps: Hauptkupplung SH .jpg The shaft is decoupled ...

Can be the rpm of the HP, MP and LP turbines? Anyway that would be dials, not lights.José M. Rico wrote: ↑Thu Jul 06, 2023 7:02 pm "Schiffswellen" are the ship's shafts, port, center and starboard.
There are however 9 "lights" in that panel.

Re: Identify indicator
What you have circled in red is to the right of switches 11, 12, and 13. It isn't shown in your diagram and is not the thing you asked the meaning of. Item 10 is to the left of the three switches 11, 12, and 13 and is not in your photo, so "Ausk. Schiffswellen" is not relevant to your que...

Re: Crew of Prizes
Hi, all. I have a multi-level question regarding crew of prizes. 1) Assuming you capture a merchantman of an enemy nation and you get that ship to a friendly port. What happens to the ship's original civilian crew? Do they get released, are they thrown in prison (though that seems harsh, as they're...
