Re: Task Force 34 vs. Kurita's Center Force

Rick Rather - Sorry that it took me so long to reply but I've been offline since last Saturday. No, the power calculations don't take into consideration prior damage. Maybe more important than that, they also don't take into consideration prior ammunition expenditure; the Japanese did quite a bit of...

Re: Yamato vs Super Yamato

I agree - eight 460mm versus six 508mm is basically a wash. The super Yamato's real gunnery advantage is in her tertiaries. She has the very good 100mm guns rather than the quite mediocre 127mm guns of the Yamato. Her only other advantage besides a somewhat higher displacement is that she would have...

Re: Task Force 34 vs. Kurita's Center Force

First of all, kudos to Rick Rather for the Terry Pratchett reference. I would like to propose an even more balanced action during this time. Instead of TF34 meeting the Japanese early, how about TF34.5 meeting the survivors of the battle off Samar later. Historically, Halsey finally sent back TF34 f...

Re: H class Battleships

My data differs from that you presented as to gun size. The first two had 40.6 cm guns; H-42 had 42 cm; the last two both had 50.8 cm. After H-39, these were design studies to study what was needed to protect against modern aircraft weapons. The increased displacement of these ships wasn't driven by...

Re: 3 German battleships in May 1941.

Everything in changing a capital ship's primary guns takes time. In fact, most of the time, you have to start building the guns and turrets before the ship is laid down because building them takes longer than building the ship. First, the guns have to be made and tested. Then, the whole rotating str...

Re: Torpedo protection

The vulnerability to torpedoes is explained by the old adage: bomb and shell hits let in air; torpedo hits let in water. Tommy303 explained torpedo defense systems well. You don't want rigid armor to counter torpedoes. This just transmits the shock, displaces stuff, and causes other internal damage....

Re: Destroyers vs. battleships - Comprehensive list from WW2

I had my database search for battles where one side had at least one battleship while the other had no battleships but did have destroyers (and maybe other ship types too). It found ten battles, many of which you have listed already. The list is: 04/13/40 battle of Narvik, part II 03/28/41 battle of...

Re: Advice wanted

Francis,

I've just emailed you the database. I'll check my email after the weekend to make sure that yahoo hasn't rejected it for some reason. If so, I'll try again Monday.

Re: Advice wanted

Francis - My spelling of Mers-El-Kebir was indeed a misspelling in the post; it was correctly spelling in the database. The database isn't available on the internet. However, I could email you a copy. I would like some feedback on its features, suggesting ways to improve them or even adding new ones...

Re: Advice wanted

alecsandros - The Indian Ocean raid was the Japanese attack into the Indian Ocean. I have an animated battle map that lasts 10 days, April 1 through April 10. Japanese surface forces made a series of attacks off the northwest coast of India. Japanese carrier planes made attacks on bases in Ceylon (S...

alecsandros - Yes, that capability was already present; it's what I meant by "specific ship types from specific navies". The list follows: 07/09/40 Calabria 09/29/40 Operation MB 5 11/11/40 Taranto raid 11/27/40 Cape Teulada 03/28/41 Matapan 09/26/41 Operation Halberd 12/07/41 Pearl Harbor...

Re: Advice wanted

alecsandros - I forgot to mention that the batle list created by your choosing of battle parameters could also detect the presence of specific individual ships. You were allowed to choose two ships and, when a list of battles was displayed, a visual flag was attached to the line for each battle that...

Re: Advice wanted

The WWII battle where weather had the most effect on gunfire was the 3/22/42 Second Battle of Sirte. The weather was so bad that Italian destroyers left early. This didn't help much, two capsized before they could reach safety. This battle obviously should have been in my list but I didn't put "...

Re: Advice wanted

alecsandros- The country selection is done in the section where you specify "specific ships from specific navies" or the same thing for planes. I don't separate into national factions. In the case of Spain, this doesn't matter since the database is of WWII battles. I did stretch it to incl...
