Re: Martini Henry rifles
The US military had thousands of Springfield muskets and to save money they had them converted to trap door shooters. The cavalry used the carbine trap door which is what Custer's command had at Little Big Horn. Many of the Indians there had repeaters. The Ordnance Bureau was very old school and did...

Skagerrak: The Battle of Jutland Through German Eyes
Skagerrak: The Battle of Jutland Through German Eyes by Gary Staff Gary Staff is probably the foremost authority on the Kaiserleiche Marine. His work on German battlecruisers is fantastic and his works fill a huge void in English language studies of the KM without the usual pro Royal Navy bias. His ...

As long as they used Enigma then the RN was going to know about it no matter how many tankers they had.

Re: Bismarck Alternate Propulsion
"It was the reliability and durability of the German steam turbine plants that was the main problem rather than range."
Dave,
I agree totally. I think if given time and with good planning the KM could have worked out the reliability issues. They had neither.

Re: Bismarck Alternate Propulsion
I think RF hit on the real issue in his post that the KM did not have the time to develop the propulsion plants needed for a long legged Navy. Because they lost their fleet at the end of WWI they were trying to catch up and be innovative at the same time. The US had years to develop the propulsion p...

Re: The Brits want out of the EU
To all in the UK who voted to leave the EU, I salute you in taking your country back! Unchecked immigration drives down wages of all workers. Good for businesses with the added benefit to an ever increasing voting block for lib politicians. Hold their feet to the fire and don't let them drag out the...

Re: Weapons used by the US Navy - Winchester 1873
Could be a personal posession from a crew member. Going just from the type of gun and USS 6, it could have something to do with the Armored Cruiser USS California. http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/OnlineLibrary/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-c/acr6.htm Later renamed USS San Diego, was torpedoed off Fire Island,...

Re: Von der Tann vs. Inflexible
Have to agree. VdT was a tough, fast BC & the fact that she took out Indefatigable, then took a beating & stayed in line gives testament to her design. The KLM should have had at least two more of them in my opinion. A very good ship!
