Alf R. Jacobsen

Hello... My apologies if you're aware of this, Jose, but I could not find these books amongst your selection of naval books. I was browsing through a norwegian booksite when I came across a book upon the Scharnhorst written by Alf R. Jacobsen. This book is available in english so I'll just copy the ...

You're right, Karl... :D I thought the same thing. It seems that the Bismarck suffered two "lucky hits" and that's why I, in another thread, (Issues of trim and countertrim) had an interest in trying to establish or dismiss a connection between those hits, in terms of void tanks and stern ...

I agree, RF. :D This might be a little digression of your topic but... Chamberlains reluctance to take actions undeniably raise a spooky conclusion. He seems to have been a politican dedicated to diplomacy in order to maintain peace but I guess that he unfortunately also lost his judgement by doing ...

Terje: I can only conclude that Hitler was a very good politican while Chamberlain was a very naive one :stubborn: I will not rate Hitler as a good politician but as a cunning one, like a fox. The other thing were his surroundings. He was lucky to have Chamberlain instead of Churchill. Churchill wo...

Incredible  Simply incredible!!! This I didn't know!

I guess nothing is more dangerous than an indecisive politican.

Hello... First, I didn't consider the hypothesis to include the entire war machinery to begin with, only a larger KM, hence my first reply regarding the Luftwaffe... As for the hypothesis, hopefully I'm not naive when asking this, would GB and US let the nazi pre-war armament progress to such a degr...

No, it exists. It's a magneto hydrodynamics drive without any moving parts, actually built into a test vessel called Yamato. About 95% engine, 5% ship, speed 7 knots. Wiki even has an article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetohydrodynamic_drive Just to bring the topic back on track after my littl...

What could you expect when the commander of the Luftwaffe never were able to see beyond his own ego? :stubborn: It's not a matter of size but of coordination between the branches and control of strategical areas such as the gateways into the Atlantic. Great Britain had both of these...

I assume that the intelligence report from the naval attache in Stockholm was based upon the report from the Gotland. That makes a lot of sense since the cruiser was a swedish one... But why on earth would Viggo Axelsen report his sighting through the naval attache in Stockholm instead of directly t...

I don't think it would change anything as the Norwegian resistance also reported the presence of Bismarck plus a heavy cruiser as they arrived in Norwegian waters. See the account given in Ludovic Kennedys' book. I assume, just to put a name on him, you're reffering to the photo taken by Viggo Axel...

Hello... I agree with Miro on this one :D The ship was, as far as I can recall, scrapped shortly after she capsized thus never getting the status that for instance the California got at Pearl (I think it's the California) But then she was not completely sunk if you know what I mean. I guess they cou...

Talking about books, some of the best naval litterature I've ever read came from the hand of Allistair Mclean... * HMS Ulysses * San Andreas * The eagles nest" (if I've pronounced it right. In German "Schloss Adler" or something like that) But the definitely best naval book ever is of...

Hello, Karl... I have a map drawing, supposedly based upon Jellicoe's "Grand Fleet 1914 - 1916" where the positions of all the units of the Grand fleet, (disabled, sunk or in engagement) is shown at approximately 1900 hours when the fleet clash was at the closest range. The HSH units howev...
