Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History
For those who dont know the difference between a battle and a campaign. A battle is a single engagement conducted over a specific piece of terrain and under the command of a single on site commander commanding a single cohesive force. A campaign is a series of battles linked by a common goal and und...

Re: 10 moments that changed the course of the war at sea
The first Americans to see active combat in the European theatre of World War II were forty-four enlisted men and five officers from the 1st Ranger Battalion. Dispersed among the Canadians and the British commandos, these men were the first American ground soldiers to see action against the Germans ...

Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History
With the grand fleet up on blocks a lot of the cruisers used to maintain the blockade probably would be drawn in to protect the east coast of Britain thus weakening any blockade.

Re: 10 moments that changed the course of the war at sea
The subsidiary ops were carried out by No3 and No4 Commandos of the Royal Marines.RF wrote: The same was true of the US, as a couple of Ranger battalions were deployed in two side operations away from the main assault, which were also more succesful.

Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History
I think only with virtual annihilation of the Home Fleet can the Germans break Britains' blockade. Now that would have made Jutland the greatest battle of all. Even if the High Seas Fleet only damages most of the Grand Fleets BBs so they in drydock for a year or so then the blockade is lifted and G...

Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History
Can I ask a very basic question here. In what way was the Battle of Jutland historically significant beyond the scale of forces deployed? The outcome did not change the existing pre-battle situation. In my view the Battle of Corenel was more historically significant than Jutland - leading to the ''...

Re: 10 moments that changed the course of the war at sea
I'm not sure of this but I think the reason why the Canadians were picked for the dieppe raid was that one of their generals volunteered them because he was a bit of a glory hound. Also one great lesson learned at Dieppe was the need of combined operations cooperation. Before Dieppe every nation in ...

Re: 10 moments that changed the course of the war at sea
And also RASing (replenishment at sea) which allowed global operations without having to have a shore base every few thousand miles. Some navies such as the RN were rather slow to take this up. In the case of the RN it was left to Churchill to ask why. The RN had naval bases scattered all over the ...

Re: HMS Hood VS Arleigh Burke-class destroyer (Guns ONLY)
Pretty much. The Harpoon missile does have a "pop-up" feature. In the last few of its approach, it goes from a sea-skimming profile to a quick climb, then dives almost straight-down on the target at over 600 kts. The warhead is considerable - 221kg of modern explosive, as opposed to Bisma...

Re: HMS Hood VS Arleigh Burke-class destroyer (Guns ONLY)
So if the torps won't work against Hood I can't see Arleigh Burke being able to do much against Hood even with its full ammo load out.

Re: HMS Hood VS Arleigh Burke-class destroyer (Guns ONLY)
Arleigh Burke s 5in pop gun would only ever be able to cause superficial damage to Hoods superstructure , it would never be able to penetrate anywhere vital, whereas a single 15in hit from could sink Arleigh Burke or at least mission kill her. Arleigh Burkes electronics would be easily knocked out b...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
This is too narrow a set of definitions. A battleship for example may not have a purely combat role. I know it's a narrow set of definitions but some order should be put on this otherwise we end up with endless arguments like this. And while I do like a really good argument In my opinion this is no...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
All this arguing about categorisation of warships is just pedantry. A protected cruiser is just a cruiser with a better internal protection system, a belted cruiser has an armoured belt along its sides, a fast battleship is just another BB but a bit quicker, a coastal battleship has less endurance. ...
