Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome
mkenny: the Malmedy Massacre indeed consists of a series of incidents but in the case of La Gleize Peiper treated the US Pow's extremely well according Reynolds his intensive study!!! Peiper was very (very!) able and responsible commander, saved Genaral Postels 320th Division near Charkow early 1943...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome
Iwd: thanks for your help explaining the reasons why more than 75.000 KIA Germans are burried in Italy. Mkenny: James Baque has nothing to do with German accusations of mass starvation in the French POW camps after may 1945! Baque accused the US supreme command of intentionally starve the millions o...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome
Hello guys. I personally don't doubt that 11.740 German POWS were in the hands of the Allies at VE day. But you all seem to forget that in addition to these soldiers most of the 110.000 surrendered at Stalingrad were already dead at that moment: they ONCE were POW's but ended up somewhere in Siberia...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome
mkenny: Ostheer losses (KIA, MIA, WIA) until 26 april 1945: 6,366,649. Seems quite logical to me if these contain the wounded at that date 26-4-1945 alone. This does NOT strictly contradict to Glantz his number of 10,8 million IF: - these are the WIA at 26 april 1945 (not counting the millions of wo...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome
LWd. Were the 20mm's not too light stopping the kamikaze's? I thought the 40mm's and 5 inch AA guns were the better weapons.
One reason why the KM abolished its too slow firing naval 37mm in favour of the 40mm Bofors (Prinz Eugen was rearmed with the Bofors!)

mkenny wrote: The mortality rate for German POW's in Russia was 35% (3.155.000/1.094.000) I am deeply interested in this source, because THE authority on German casuality statistics is Overmars and he states that probably at least 1.475.000 German soldiers died in Soviet custody (the Soviet official...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
mkenny wrote: You only have to look at the millions of German POW's taken before the surrender to realise your claim is rubbish. Yes there were millions taken prisoner before the surrender by the Soviets: 2 million to be specific by the Soviets and 1,2 million handed over to them by the Western Alli...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
Bgile. Ok, I was just reacting on your kind of irony when I stated that the German clothing of the SS was very sophisticated and advanced (like the US Paratroops also had such a kind of clothing). For "those days" the Germans were ahead with their outfit compared to their adversaries. That ...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
Bgile. Come one Bgile, you are just joking. In every US movie the "good guys"from the USA want to dress themselves in German uniforms. Ever saw The dirty dozen? Where eagles dare? The latest US movie about a German submarine Uxxx? All the same and Germans always are swept away, like flies....

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
Alecsandros and mkenny:  for your analysis. I also did read Schneider about losses by air attacks and detected the same ambiguities. Was the Tiger II in the 101SS a total loss? Of most books I read about Normandy air attacks were quite annoying and could break up planned attacks. Damage, stres...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
THX Dave. This last remark is what I always thought: weakness of the German engines in WWII gave a lot trouble (Ships, aircraft, heavy tanks). They have apparently learnt from it. But Germans have no impressive ships or aircraft anymore, there are left with their tanks. Then another: isn't the Leopa...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
Alecsandros. There were no 200 Tigers in Normandy but 5 + 45 + 45 + 45 + 2x7 + 14 = 168 at most and of them about 150-160 were lost; some tried to reach the German border and some were removed earlier to the Waffenamt for repairs. About 30 of them fought North of the Seine, the others South of it. m...

Re: Theoretical WW2 tank engagements
1675 is more than all the Jagdtigers, Elephanten, Jagdpanthers together and more or less the same number as theJagdpanzer IV. The Soviets also have their long barrelled SU 122 ...... and the grizly bears: the (I)SU 152. Both also produced in large numbers I believe. Then there was also the outstandi...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
Bgile. Is is not ridiculous if you look at the characteristics of the Leopards last version to a Chalenger or Abrahams: the German tank is widely judged by experts to be the best in the word. If you call this ridiculous ... Bgile. Aircraft were THE threat for the German tanks in WWII. Allied aircraf...
