Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Antonio, Please excuse me if this has been posted before (this thread is getting rather long), and ,I must admit, I'm getting confused :? (partly due to the fact that sometimes people don't reference what post they're replying to). Is this the second board of enquiry you referenced to after my last ...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
2 points I'd like your thought on Good Sirs: 1, Am I right in thinking everyone (in command chain) aboard Norfolk that day THOUGHT Bismarck was a lot farther away than she actually was? And if not why didn't someone point out the mistake! So what was the point in opening fire at the PRESUMED long ra...

Re: Force Z
AIUI, Formidable was supposed to join Force Z at a later date.
She ran aground during working up in the Caribbean and was therefore even further delayed.

Re: The end of Scharnhorst
Could a 6" shell from Jamaica be the cause when Scharnhorst slowed because of damage to machinery? Jamaica (and Belfast) were firing at the time, are there any recorded hits from these ships? I find it hard to believe a 14" shell explosion in a machinery space could be repaired in the time...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Antonio, I've just realised something that has been puzzling me about your diagrams (posted 30th November at 7:03 PM. from POW the bearing to Bismarck was approx. Green 30. Bearing was measured from the bow (0 degrees) Alecsandros posted: About 8" efficiency: the Norfolk and Dorsetshire opened ...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
At 05:41? (or when Norfolk identified the ship as Bismarck), how much further away from Norfolk was PE than Bismarck? Could the two German ships be differentiated from each other at that angle and different ranges? (I take it PE was not 'wooded' by Bismarck) Could Norfolk have just assumed the 'big ...

Re: Another Bismarck sortie
If Britain had intelligence (Ultra) regarding this sortie taking place, Would the RAF/FAA and Coastal Command have reinforced their northern airfields, Iceland and Shetland bases with more maritime search (Hudson, Sunderland, Catalina etc.)and strike aircraft (Beaufort, Blenheim, Beaufighter, Swordf...

Thanks
Tom

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Wadinga, I believe there was normally an order "for wheel amidships (or 'midships)" to centre the rudder before the 'steady' order. Regarding the statement by Captain Leach...why does he state twice his intention to dis-engage it just sounds (and reads) so clumsy? 1) " The sinking of ...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Dunmunro,
In your crop of #69731 it looks like there are 2 smoke columns. Any idea on the second (Norfolk?)
Why didn't POW make more use of her 5.25's?

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
I thought smoke for a screen was made by injecting oil into the burners making a thick heavy smoke which lay on the water. http://www.world-war.co.uk/destroyers.php3 (scroll down to Gloworm's pic.) You can clearly see it billowing from the forward funnel. Alberto's 30 seconds may be a little short t...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Dunmunro, What's the object that appears to be sticking up below the 'and' in your description of where POW is (purple writing)? A mark on the photo I presume. I must admit I originally (on smaller copies) thought it was the remains of Hood's stern. But the larger image shows it too close to the cam...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
How do the relevant officers decide what time to put on their report (If I'd been on POW's compass platform at the time of the hit, I can't imagine that the first thing I'd do is look at my watch). Now, if, at the compass platform hit (06:02), I had looked at my watch (and noted the time) Then, soon...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Could there be a concern on Wake-Walker's part that further engagement could have pushed the Bismarck further Westward, and resulted in a stern chase away from RN heavy forces that were a little 'short legged' range wise?
