Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

Hi Legend , I think that the cross section is not an accurate plan , but rather just indicative of what is in the hull , a sort of "Ship Anatomy educational explanatory view ". What it DOES show very well is the constraint that continues to be placed on hull width dimensions by the need to...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

Well , we're just playing . I was trying to achieve a situation where alert follows alert , emergency messages and situations are coming in thick and fast , and ALL the departments in your task force are getting standbys and heads-ups , even your small marine air portable unit , and the search+rescu...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

It would be difficult to do , extremely difficult in the situation where you were actually at war with the US , because the task force is designed to defend itself against all likely risks over a sustained period . The problem would come in a situation where war hostilities had not commenced , but t...

Re: genesis of the Scharnhorst design

the process was in fact quite simple , and went as follows ; - 1 ) Post Versailles treaty , the Weimar Navy consists of Obsolete pre-Dreadnought battleships , Pre-1914 light cruisers , torpedoboats ( early destroyers , not MTB / PT / S-boote ) plus a lot of minesweepers and the usual small ships . E...

Re: bismark "superfiring" secondary battery

The three secondary ( 2 x 15cm ) on each side of Bismark were all on the same level . The centre turrets were placed further out towards the side of the ship however ( and near the widest part of the ship ) so she could just about fire two turrets on either beam right ahead , or right astern , at ze...

Re: Norfolk & Suffolk - Engage ?

So what was the problem with her reaching Bismarck? Her salvoes fell well short and IIRC Wake-Walker ordered a cease fire to stop wasting ammo. Strange. And how come she did't come under fire from the Germans - or were they too preoccupied with PoW to notice? Wasn't the Baron supposed to be keeping...

Re: New Titanic sinking theory

Hi marcelo . I think you have to define "Failed" . Watertightness was not an absolute as it is today with fully welded hulls ( like the boast "We actually DUST our bilges ! " ) nor was merchant ship subdivision as comprehensive as that in a warship of the time . You couldnt "...

Re: Norfolk & Suffolk - Engage ?

Well , Dave , you do it as a bullfighter does , by dodging about , ie closing the range while steering with minor erratic and unpredictable variations to your approach course with both N and S doing this independently , and preferably widely seperated from your enemy's view . While running in under ...

Re: Range and Penetration Table for the 38 cm SK C/34

Gentlemen ; RE the explanation regarding the Neue Art types of armour - could you supplement this with a post explaining the actual process involved please ? I know you make your armour plate in forging rollers and then lay it flat on a bogey trolley before spreading the carbon on top (charcoal?) an...

Re: New Titanic sinking theory

Hi Marcello , yes , crew right up forward is the standard layout for most ships , warships too . Its a hypothetical situation , but IF you were to take the decision to stand straight on towards the berg you would have to take the fast decision that THAT was the best of a choice of bad alternatives ,...

Re: New Titanic sinking theory

Actually , HAD she rammed it ( head on ) Titanic quite probably might have been better off , although her bows would be a right crushed mess ( look at the pic of the "Stockholm" after she rammed the "Andrea Doria" ) and the terrific sudden deacceleration would have caused despera...

Re: German naval mutiny/disinclination for further action 1918

I’ve been following this thread with interest. Please excuse the ignorance I’m going to show in my question – I am not very knowledgeable about the mutiny. I’ve read about Jutland and played simulations of it. It seemed to me that the Germans could have defeated the British fleet. Is this premise i...

Re: New Titanic sinking theory

You are right Marcello . Titanic sank because she grazed an Ice Berg at high speed , gashing her hull . You could have built her from welded titanium and you would still put a hole in her doing that . The Fault and Blame for the subsequent loss of life should be placed where it belongs -- on her gre...
