Re: Battle Tracks at Denmark Strait
Well the statement also begs the question "When after salvo 18?" Vic, you have PoW running roughly parallel to Bismarck for ~3 minutes after salvo 18, and despite the fact that PoW has 3 functioning main battery turrets, and 2 functioning DCTs, she doesn't fire at shot! C'mon, this is a c...

This appears to be a range plot from a Dreyer table. You still haven't address the issue of PoW's Gunnery Aspects Report stating that the forward DCT was wooded after salvo 18.Vic Dale wrote: ?

Re: Bismarck and Prince Eugen replaced by...
It's in the logs at the time of the Bismarck chase. This is the highest speed I know of that was recorded on a KGV-class BB. The trials showed the following results: KGV: 28.0kn PoW: 28.0kn DoY: 28.3kn Anson: 27.62kn Howe: 27.5kn So DoY exceeded 28kn on trials, but the average for the class was abo...

Re: Battle Tracks at Denmark Strait
PoW never lost director control of her 14" guns, yet for some reason you have Y turret as engaging Bismarck in local control after 6:02. Why wouldn't PoW continue to engage Bismarck using Director control of her 3 main armament turrets? Why do A and B turret go silent after 6:02 when they have...

Re: How would you improve the royal navy
The greatest single cost benefit would have come from the introduction of the 20mm Oerlikon, but more quad pom-poms would have helped a lot as well. But if I could have gone back in time... I would have converted all the A to I class DDs to to 4 x 4" (2 x 2) and added quad pom-poms and some 20m...

Re: How would you improve the royal navy
The 4.5" gun was quite a good weapon and when two of the Dido class received them instead of the 5.25 due to inavailability of the 5.25, the 4.5 was shown to be a superior AA weapon (no surprise there). The 4.5" was shown to be a good AA weapon, but I don't think it was shown to be better...

Re: How important was sinking in final battle?
The FAA had 15 Swordfish circling the final action, who were just waiting to deliver the coup de grace, and Tovey could have ordered Sheffield and Renown to have closed in and finished Bismarck as well.

PE's war diary mentions "went to 30 knots" at 0008 (0108 UK time) hours on May 24th. And then 27 knots, 13 minutes later. PE's engineering log does not note this change: http://hmshood.com/history/denmarkstrait/speedgraph.jpg Yet, a similar change is noted at 0510 on the 24th! This should...

Re: Bismarck Speed
Ciao all, into a documentary I recall having seen recently, the Baron Burkhard Von Mullenheim-Rechberg was saying that in order to try to shack off the pursuers, so Suffolk and Norfolk following them, Admiral Lutjens at a certain point decided to increase the squadron speed to the maximum under poo...

Re: Did Hood fire back turrets on DS ?
I don't know how Hood was set up. I do know the newer US battleships could accept main battery fire control input from the main director, the secondary main director, and any of the five inch directors. Additionally fire could be directed from the conning tower and I think turret two, which acutall...
