Re: Graf Spee weakness?
The Sylvester was sunk in 1945. My prior note indicated that I started with the first Liberty ship sunk, so a boat from 1945 would not have been included, especially considering that there were 120 Liberties sunk after my 19th sample. The sampling was kept random that way. I also commented that Timm...

Re: Graf Spee weakness?
RF, yes, U-862's Commander, Heinrich Timm liked to empty his gun! A bit surprising considering his distance from home in Pacific waters with the associated difficulty in reloading. In general, the Liberties were easy to sink, usually requiring one to two torpedoes. I took a look at 19 sinkings on ub...

Re: Graf Spee weakness?
RF, do you have any citations regarding Liberty ships that took such punishment before sinking? I would be willing to research such sinkings in the uboat.net website if you can provide the uboat number or the Liberty Ship name. As Tommy offers, the "backs" of these ships were notoriously p...

I don't see any motivation for Mr. Rzonca to tell anything but the truth here. What he said is believable and probably reflects the prevailing conditions. If there was extended and leisurely time to effect repairs perhaps something could have been done, but that was not the case. I don't recall wher...

Please see the following website, indicating Walter Hudd as the actor who portrayed Holland. Walter was 60 at the time of the movie's release in 1960 whereas Roy Hudd was 24. Setting aside the makeup challenge at that time to age someone 36 years, with so many actors to choose from there would be no...

I believe that one of the purposes was to provide a misleading view of the length or size of the ship. The false bow and stern waves depict waves considerably aft and forward of the bow and stern, respectively. With this camouflage treatment on the Bismarck it may have been possible to misidentify i...
