Re: structure on Bismarck conning tower

I suspect these flat featureless plates are merely mounting brackets for the lights, normally installed as two sets, but there appear to be no actual lights installed in Grimstadfjord. OTOH The photo quality may be inadequate to show them. The lights had to be removed in the daytime. Herr Nilsson's...

wadinga wrote: Sat Apr 24, 2021 12:46 pm Does this interesting Gothic item say anything about the tow loads experienced or any need to compensate with steering if only one is deployed?
No, the Bugschutzgerät (bow protection device) is designed for simultaneous deployment on both sides.

Re: Raumotters to the Rescue

Bugschutz.jpg ... The devices operate the worst when sailing in front of the sea, at low speed levels and at a flat setting. Then it can happen that the paravanes no longer operate and come to the surface. To get the paravanes under control again, you have to take a course towards the sea. Driving ...

Re: bismark-after torpedo hit

From Tirpitz' "Schiffbuch II" from July 22nd 1941 Tirpitz Dreheigenschaften .jpg The ship cannot be steered when sailing over the stern, rather it tends to go with the stern into the wind. Once it has started to turn, it cannot be stopped even by unbalanced engine speed and the opposite ru...

Re: The loss of the Hood video

Also, one of the earlier shots shows Hood heeling in a sharp turn and since the rudder evidence from the wreck shows just such a turn was underway at the moment of her destruction, we may assume that heel submerged more of her starboard side, and put the lower edge of the belt deeper under the wate...

Re: Various Q's regarding fire control tools

The picture in the first post is "Artillerie-Schußwert-Rechner" but not a "Gegner-Geber" or "Foto-Tafel". The "Foto-Tafel" was part of the "Foto-Anlage", which was necessary to rate the shooting by using cameras. The "Gegner-Geber" provided...

Re: Various Q's regarding fire control tools

I think in this context it's "enemy values calculator and transmitter"

Input:
  • own course
  • target direction in relation to the horizon
  • target speed (also manually)
  • target bearing (also manually)
Output:
  • target speed
  • target bearing
  • target course

Re: Bismarcks anit-submarine/ mine

The rectangular transmitters are always open to sea.

Gneisenau's transmitters were protuded and embedded into more streamlined casings.

Bismarck's bow transmitters were installed into a horizontal recess of the bulbous bow similar to Tirpitz.
