Re: Bismarck radar detector

hans, of course they had passive capability. Radar consists of sender and receiver. The receiver is the passive part. Prinz Eugen searched for enemy radar with her own radar set: Der Kommandant des Kreuzers "Prinz Eugen" hat gemeldet, dass keine britischen Deteimpulse aufgenommen worden si...

Re: Bismarck radar detector

I don't see a statement supporting what you say. That's why I said "implies". The crux of the matter is Skl/Chef MND had the leading role in regard of the allocation of radar detectors. It's very unlikely they had no information about such a device on board Bismarck, but they do not menti...

Re: Bismarck radar detector

Hello Mr.Nilsson, I am possibly wrong not having technical knowledge of radars, but message from Gruppe West to Lütjens on May 25 at 02:38 (' Feststellung feindlicher DT-Frequenz wertvoll für späteren Einbau Störgeräts. ', ' Determination of hostile DT-frequency valuable for later installation of j...

It's very, very unlikely Bismarck had any radar detector at all.

Re: 150/152 mm gun turret locations

Although it was just a 6° wide sector (3°- 0°- 357°) technically Bismarck was able to fire 8 guns ahead at the same time.

Re: Bismarck range

We have already discussed this before. Bismarck´s machinery was not efficient, her consumption was 325 grams/hp/hour, whereas for example Massachusetts´ was 305. 325 grams/hp/hour was just a contractually guaranteed maximum fuel consumption for 265 rpm at 3x46,000 SHP. In case of rpm and SHP didn't...

Re: Paintwork Query

The baltic stripes were painted in harbor when the ship was in a light condition. In Norway Bismarck was still near full load condition. When the stripes were overpainted a part of them was still under water and couldn't be overpainted. The didn't use waterline grey on the waterline put overpainted ...

Re: Bismarck water line

José, we have to distinguish between "Konstruktionstiefe" (construction depth) = 9.5 m and "Konstruktionstiefgang" (construction draft) = 9.522 m. Construction depth (as well as "Seitenhöhe" (side height) = 15 m) is measured without hull plating. The bottom plating is 2...
