Re: Oscarburg fortress in Drobak Narrows, Oslofijord
Pretty optimistic . In peacetime coups-de-main of this sort , the thing to fear is not so much that you will run into an organised defense under the control of the assigned command , so much as that acting-corporal Smith will be the senior man on watch on the night , and will let fly with everything...

British by my passport , East Anglian by upbringing , mixed European by bloodlines , Greek by Inclination , Cretan when cross / under the influence . I think your Papou got out just at the right time judging by what went on after - was he a Venizelist particularly , or just caught up in it all ? Ta ...

Re: Oscarburg fortress in Drobak Narrows, Oslofijord
Thanks Marcelo , that just about wraps it up , there are most of the weapons types there in photos . It would seem that as is usually the case with these giant fortress schemes , the countries involved spend an ocean of national wealth to create them and make them absolutely attack proof , and then ...

Re: Oscarburg fortress in Drobak Narrows, Oslofijord
Thanks marcelo . I found that one - another three of those big Armstrong guns to match the three opposite in Oscarbourg , plus a funny size bigger piece by norskekannon . There is also a big brick and stone fortress east and a bit north of this ,( showing as a green space with wiggle lines ) . I can...

Re: Oscarburg fortress in Drobak Narrows, Oslofijord
Perhaps the emplacements are , unless later building has swallowed them , but that is a pretty rural area . I'll have another look at Google Earth and see if I can see anything there .

Re: Swap Sydney with Zara or New Orleans
If I was von Bonensalat, I would prefer one of my specially built Hilfskreuzer as previously outlined. Disguised as a neutral Swede the hilfskreuzer asks the intercepting AMC if she has a doctor on board. The AMC isn't suspicious of this vessel and closes to less than 1,000 yards to send an inspect...

Re: The worst machine gun ever
The thing is called "Krumlauf" and was developed for street fighting in Russian cities . There is a "bent" smoothbore extension to the weapon barrel and a an angled mirror sight in a black wedge-shaped box attached to the barrel for sighting . I think it was made principally for ...

Re: No return to the Moon
He still hasnt justified his disparaging remark about Gays . I live in a country where homosexuality is a generally tolerated thing that is recognised as generally arising (!) out of a genetic predisposition rather than some learned deviancy . Besides , when the sweaty fumbling stops you can talk in...

I think thats in Germany , the two boys with their backs to us in light shirts are in Hitler Jugend Uniforms and one of the lads on top of the tank appears to be too - the crew are obviously showing her off to their awed civilian audience .

Re: Yamato plans given to USA
Nice link Gary  ! ! ! Sort of " Warship design by Collage " technique - Going to his main website I found stuff on there for other navies too , some of it quite plausible and cleverly "scenario-ed" but as you say , some wildly impractical and pretty obviously cut and ...

Sorry boys but I dont believe any warship doesn't drill it's crews in Fire-fighting - Thats about lesson No 2 ( after "cleaning your boots" ) in any fighting service , what to do in a fire . Especially Engine room crews ,where you are dealing with inflammable things in closed spaces . Its ...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
I doubt you want seawater in your fuel tanks. There is ( or should be ) a sump or pipe stub at the bottom of the tanks with a drain cock to open and get any water out . This is because fuel oil always has some water in it anyway due to condensation factors , and you need to get that out or surprisi...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
It seems to me from looking at the discussion here , and that over on the Hood site , that you are chasing something that is a bit of an illusion , an actual speed performance on any particular day which accords exactly with a ships "Official top speed", figures . Given that displacement l...
