Re: America wins one despite it all

I see what you are saying, Dave. I'm not versed enough nor knowledgeable enough I don't think to make a true determination. What I do indeed know is that the (north) polar ice cap has almost disappeared in comparison to where it was. Apparently the temperatures have spiked quicker than what they can...

Thanks Steve, that's where I get most of my info on naval weaponry.

Re: OPERATION PEDESTAL

The ultimate triumph of the Royal Navy was reflected in the humiliating surrender of the 70 ships of the High Seas Fleet on 21 November 1918. I've read about it, it seems such a sad situation with a powerful once proud navy being made to surrender and later being scuttled. Regardless where you alle...

Re: OPERATION PEDESTAL

PS. No- I do not think "tactical defeat and strategic victory" is an oxymoron. They go perfectly well together eg Battle of Jutland That is indeed true for Jutland, though in all honesty it was not the battle that resulted in the strategic defeat of the German fleet. Th German fleet proved...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

Absolutely Byron. The exact numbers may not be there, but it should give you a general idea. As I said, the one thing that I question is the relative effectiveness of the .50 cal compared to the 20mm, I'm wondering why. A few ideas: 1) To small of a sample base for the .50 cal? A lot of rounds were ...

Re: America wins one despite it all

Byron - it seems as though your thoughts on the matter are more ones of faith than of fact. My father (now passed away) used to be an investigative reporter for a local paper, and one thing he told me was that to always follow the money. This means follow the money as to who has funded politicians, ...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

. This means that if there are a few aircraft attacking a TF, every 5" weapon in the TF that can bear on the target is going to open fire, even though most of them really don't have much of a chance of hitting the target because of their location and what the target is doing. Statistically, ev...

Re: America wins one despite it all

rather than flush freedom and prosperity down the drain in the name of cleaning up a make believe mess? I find the references to "freedom" in these type of situations, as "freedom" has nothing to do with the matter. The use of "freedom" in this way seems to be it's own...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

You know, after looking at these statistics and calculating things like range and time on target, I'm rather surprised. I'd like to add a few other things: From Navweaps: Effective range during World War II against aircraft for manually aimed weapons rarely exceeded 1,000 yards (910 m), although USN...

Re: OPERATION PEDESTAL

Putting some deep thought into this... :D A "Tactical Defeat" but Strategic Victory seems almost an oxymoron on modern non set-piece battlefields. I'm trying to think of any that fit this, and I'm sure their may be a few but it is rare. On an ancient or middle ages battlefield I think it c...

Re: America wins one despite it all

I might add how I hate how much politics has become a matter of "faith", not facts. Case in point there were 2 black suspects killed by police officers recently that were both well publicized. One was a pretty clear case of a suspect assaulting a police officer unless all the evidence had ...

Re: America wins one despite it all

There has been three big lies dominate in the public debate: 2) That co2 is causing significant climate change and it represents a existential crisis. Funny. Originally the conservative policy on Global warming was to deny it. When that became untenable the next step was to claim it was not CO2 dri...

Re: America wins one despite it all

Fracking may well be a boon for US economics. But it still is a non-renewable source of energy, so work still needs to continue to find the most viable renewable energy sources, not finding the sources per se but finding which are cost effective when taking into account any building of infrastructur...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

How in the world do you assign kills to 20mm, when 5" and 40mm have been shooting at the same target before the 20mm even begins firing? How do you assign kills to 40mm when the target may have already been damaged by 5" fire? Does the 5" only get credit when it downs a target before...
