Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?

2.1.5. Rate of fire A video recorded from cruiser Prinz Eugen during the Denmark-straight battle shows a sequence of Bismarck firing for effect at high rate (Wirkungsschießen). The rear turrets fire at 24, then 29 and then 32-sec.-intervals (at the correct tape speed). 24 sec. equals a rate of fire...

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?

Hello Mr. Nilsson, thanks for all information. You write: "Because Bismarck's fuel consumption rate is different from Tirpitz'...", but I don't see yet why a different fuel consumption rate might affect max overload power (and max speed). It might affect max range only. Assuming Bismarck ...

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?

3) You mention FuMO 23 radar. I have always seen FuMO 27 for both "Bismarcks" and FuMO 26 for Tirpitz in 1944 only. Am I right ? AFAIK FuMO 27 was useful to direct fire at night but not to provide fully blind fire, due to its unability to separate splashes. FuMO 26 was capable of fully bl...

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?

Thank you Mr. Nilsson for clarifying the steel type. Re. max speed achieved by Bismarck, in addition to the 30.6 kn from the Bismarck/Richelieu-comparison, the Baron mentions a 30.8 kn in his book as max speed obtained 'on one occasion' in November 1940. I don't see any reason why Bismarck should h...

Seems to be reliable.

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?

Everything above 156.000 WPS for Bismarck is just speculation and actually it's quasi impossible. Thank you very much. So I take 30,6 kts at 156.000 WPS as maximum speed for Bismarck and 30,8 kts at 163.0026 WPS for Tirpitz. This would make them about a knot slower than Iowa and Richelieu and about...

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?

Hello Mr. Nilsson, 2) Kommando roof 200 mm non-cemented, are you sure it was Wh ? Wasn't around 150 mm the thickness limit for laminated steel ? Wasn't it KNC ('forged') as (e.g.) main turrets rear plates ? Kommando sides: 350 mm KC. Communication shaft should be 220 mm KC as well. Yes, I'm sure. W...

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?

to 2) I took this from the book "Battleship Bismarck- A Design and Operational History of William H.Garzke Jr., Robert O. Dulin Jr., and William Jurens (moderator of this forum), with James Cameron, page 43. There it says: "The conning tower roof plates were 220mm of KC armor, the sides w...

Re: bismark-after torpedo hit

The Hessen-method was very dependent on the particular ship. On other ships of the Braunschweig-class and the Deutschland-class it didn't work (it was "several times even called infeasible"). On SMS Wettin it worked in case of the rudder jammed to starboard, while it didn't work with port-...

Plates 1-54 main belt, plates 55-84 upper belt. The main belt plates were roughly twice as heavy as the upper belt plates.

Re: Bismarck's TDS so abysmal?

2) What appears to be a flaw, actually isn't a flaw, and our negative interpretation of this feature resides in our incomplete or incorrect understanding of the full situation. I think 2) is possible. This kind of "gap" already existed on the large cruisers of the Mackensen-class and the ...
