Re: German strategy: Middle East vs Russia
Thinking logically the best access and supply route from Europe to Iran/Iraq is across the Bosphorus through Turkey, which would also put Wehrmacht panzer divisions on Turkey and Irans border with Russia without having to go via Africa and Palestine. Now Turkey was neutral in WW2 - but in 1941 wide...

Re: 276 years ago today...
... there was a warship called "Glorioso" that fought to the last shell and put up a most gallant fight against impossible odds, worthy of the old days of the Spanish Navy. I would dare say that the correct phrase should be "to the last shot" as shell had not been introduce to t...

Re: Photo of FuMO 26 Presentation Console
Hello Mr. Malara, thanks, however, I had read that GEMA radars were not equipped with a circular (PPI like) presentation screen but with 2 or 3 linear indicators (for range, bearing and fine bearing) but I may be wrong. hans Hi. A circular screen need not to be a PPI. May be it was just a cathode r...

Re: Photo of FuMO 26 Presentation Console
Hello all, I have got from a friend of mine this image. He says it contains the FuMO 26 presentation console where operator could read data coming from the radar. Is anyone able to confirm and to show me "presentation" panel(s) and other equipment ? Does anybody know where this console wa...

Re: How close was the final battle?
Hallo Dummunro, I doubt that Rodney and KGV would shoot very accurately while maneuvering. Did the AFCT get continuous inputs and thus provided continuous firing solution (like on the German C38 or the US Mark 37 FCS), or had it to be fed with data for every new calculation, i.e. were results gener...

Re: New Book - Spanish Warships in the Age of Sail 1700-1860
Just received my copy of this book. I have only just started ploughing through it, but it is very arguably the best book of the "Winfield series". This book is not a Winfield "solo effort". The following co-authors were major contributors: > John Tredrea - (well known AoS resear...

German strategy: Middle East vs Russia
Hi guys. Look at this theories: 1-In the Rommel Papers he (Rommel) criticizes Hitler strategy of attacking Russia, proposing instead that a stronger Afrika Korps should have attacked Egypt, this opening Alexandria port to Italian ships that would logistically support the AK. The AK should then go on...

Re: The Hold
As a side note. The bark Pamir sunk in a hurricane in 1957 while crossing the Atlantic, with a cargo of grain. The culprit could be a strike of the stevedores in Buenos Aires port, where she had loaded the cargo. Due to the strike, Army draftees were employed for the job, and it is suspected that t...

Re: The Hold
Thanks, all. But I was thinking Age of Sail, hence the section Age of Sail :ok: Ohhh sorry. Yes, in the age of sail stevedores would move the cargo in the hold. But...I can´t think of many heavy cargo in that era. May be cannons made for export. Or timber, England imported it from the Baltic for he...

Re: The Hold
I've watched people load grain into the holds on a ship next to us in Singapore. The pallets were hoisted into the hold and the workers pulled them off the pallet and stowed them. The pallet went out when unloaded and the crane picked up another one. (The things you'll watch when you're on duty and...

Re: Denmark Strait: Half salvos vs full salvos
The problem of firing a full salvo is that you have to wait the reloading time (at least 30 seconds) to fire again, whereas with a half salvo you can make corrections and firing immediately. Nor to mention the waste of 4 shells if you didn´t have the range yet.
