Re: Swap Sydney with Zara or New Orleans

................. a 3,600 ton Narvik class destroyer, a 6,500 ton standard outline small cargo liner or something like a US Liberty ship ................. Just a quick point for those of us without webbed feet  Tons in Warships are tons in weight ( albeit sometimes strangely defined ) whereas...

Re: Swap Sydney with Zara or New Orleans

The supply ships were however simply a big ( for the time ) fast tanker with some of the centreline tanks spaces constructed as stores , supplies , magazines and prisoner/accomodation space , so that looking at one from close range you would see nothing odd except for the extra cargo handling gear a...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome

[ He says the SS Panzer divisions were regarded as generally the best and hardest fighting formations on the Ostfront and that the GD were "nobodies" in comparison . Soviet intelligence seemed to have a different view - or did they confuse the Panzer troops with the grenadier troops? Well...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome

The KM marine units you allude to hammy I believe were created at the start of 1945 out of naval personel previously involved with coastal artillery, and used to provide land defence of naval installations in Germany as the allies closed in. There never was a German equivalent of the RN's Royal Mar...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome

It seems some have difficulty understanding the difference between introducing a new and untested weapon system into service slowly by ironing out the bugs (Meteor) and desperate attempts to stave off defeat by putting it straight into front line service(Me 262) Simply told there was no need for th...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome

...Of al 400+ German divisions the one on top (elite of the elite) is the Panzer Grenadier Division Gross Deutschland from 1943 !! It was the best division of WWII in every aspect. You really should watch those superlatives. "every aspect" !!! I seriously doubt it. A good account of the r...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome

You have to ask why the Luftwaffe had any tanks to begin with. What next a Kriegsmarine Panzer Division? Our ( testicularly challenged  ) aquaintance Mr Goering is responsible for this one , as in a grandiose gesture early in WW2 he had told Hitler that the Luftwaffe would raise some additiona...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome

Nevertheless, the German armor was above British contemporary armor (1942-1945), wouldn't you agree ? Yes I think that is fair . One of the "annoying" aspects of the history of AFV development for a Brit , is that having developed the things as a weapon in the first place , the subsequent...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome

The panzer Maus . :stop: That is a tank that you cant drive over any bridge without providing an over-deck support because the thing is so heavy . You cant drive it over any road of the time because the roads , even the autobahns , are insufficiently thick to take it and every place there is a duct ...

Re: Swap Sydney with Zara or New Orleans

In Germany Admiral Raeder was considering a Hipper development armed with four triple 5.9s ( and on a 14000 ton displacement that should have been a formidable opponent ) at one stage . A Hipper with triple 5.9's instead of 8 inch? I'm not really convinced that it would be that formidable, its like...

Re: Battleship Vanguard Armor

The armour deck in Vanguard was put in at a higher level in response to the growing air threat at the time these ships (KGVs , Lions and Vanguard) were designed . You have to remember that this threat was as understood at the back end of the 1930s , so you are looking at the Dive bombers of the STAR...

Re: Swap Sydney with Zara or New Orleans

In regard to books R F , there is a new one of those "Osprey" military series on German Hilfskreuzers of WW2 , but I think that series is a bit dear ( at £12 odd ) for a 70 page summary . I skimmed it in our local Waterstones , but found quite a few of the photos were ones I'd seen or have...
