Re: Bismarck Speed
Lutjens for not filling up Bismarck's bunkers. I think you are quite right. I also mentioned something like that a few years back. Lütjens and/or Lindemann must have done this to gain a little more speed by improving the weigth and trim of the boat. Obviously, it was not a case of negligence or bad...

Re: Bismarck Speed
“Speed trials continued for all November 1940 , achieving during one of those “runs”, the maximum speed of 30,8 knots , superior if compared to the projected one. There were not only jubilation and proud on board, but we were aware of the tactical advantage this speed could give us during our Atlan...

Re: Bismarck Speed
I think the order to go to 30 knots was intended to out-run the "cruiser on the starboard quarter" The squadron had been fogging hoping to shake him off to no avail, so a period at 30 knots might help. A heavy snow storm seems to have come to the aid of the German squadron and speed is re...

Re: Bismarck Speed
I can't figure out if you are talking about "relative speed on the water" based on a log or RPM's or "steam opened up for" and the "speed made good over the bottom". I still remember that that somewhere there is a message from BS to PG that said something like "yo...

Re: Bismarck Speed
Ciao all, @ Ulrich surely on the morning on May 24th, 1941 at 00.08 Prinz Eugen was ordered to sail at 30 knots and Bismarck was following on her wake, so one must assume she was sailing same speed as well. Ref PG KTB on May 24th, 1941 at 00.08 : " Auf 30 sm gegangen " ( went to 30 knots ...

Re: Bismarck Speed
I rescaled Antonio's image and adjusted the contrast to make the shell splash centre easier to determine, and using the measuring tool in the GIMP, my best estimate is a speed of ~26knots, (+/- 2/4% best guess at probable error), based upon a decrease in distance of 80.346 meters in 6 secs.

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
I'm not sure if those figures can be trusted, and I can only tell that it is not a faulty translation, maybe the crew member exaggerated a bit and that just before the speed test, everyone had to leave the bridge (which I think is quite dangerous anyway, having an empty bridge while racing through ...

Re: Bismarck draft and displacement
The archival data states that the draught at the construction displacement, that was 47,253 metric tons, was normally 9.4 meters in sea water. This is where trying to get a handle on Bismarck's most basic data is so frustrating. I've looked at the published draught versus displacement figures for H...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
..... and I happened to notice that Hood made exactly 28.37 knots on one of her trials with the displacement and SHP recorded. Is Bismarck likely to exceed Hood's performance at 28.37 knots, yes or no? .... Sure, why not, considering the many complexities involved? There are many other factors invo...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
Regarding Prinz Eugen's 33.5 knots on trials, I noticed that PE's 12 boilers were each capable of producing 56 tonnes of steam per hour, according to Koop. In comparison: PE = 56 tonnes/hour S&G = 54 tonnes/hour Bismarck = 50 tonnes/hour. Admiral Blucher has a stated full power rating of 133000 ...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
Essentially your claiming that Bismarck only made something like 25 knots on 117,400 hp, but they wrote down 28.37 in the official record instead, because they figured it would have done that if the displacement was only 43k. That's preposterous! I believe your grossly over simplfying a very comple...

Re: Bismarck Secondary Armament Gunnery
Yes, It was obvious, here's several damage reports including PoW's at DS: http://www.hmshood.org.uk/reference/official/adm267/adm267-111.htm as you can see, the damage is recorded in detail and the possibility of 5.9" hits is discussed, but considered unlikely. I was surprised that the shells w...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
It follows from this, that for Bismarck at: 43000 tonnes, 138000 shp = 29 knots 48000 tonnes, 154000 shp = 29 knots 51000 tonnes, 163700 shp = 29 knots So how does the indisputable 28.4 knots, at 117400 shp, at a displacement of 48,000-49,000 metric tons fit in here? I wish it were indisputable, bu...
