Re: British postwar tests on armor
Thank you. I prefer to have a summary of these things as I do lack the expertise for delving too deep into these matters. What matters to me is that these tests were conducted and the result was that two thin plates equal one thick plate if spaced-array arrangement is done right. I wonder why some p...

British postwar tests on armor
I heard that there was a British test on armor postwar where German plates were tested and shown that two layers of horizontal armor equal about one single plate of the cumulative thickness, thus proving that the long range horizontal protection was on par with most Allied ships When exactly were th...

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret
I am not certain why these splinters -- if they existed at all -- might be of any particular significance, i.e. I don't think I quite understand the question. Might you elaborate or rephrase, please? Bill Jurens Hello Bill, sorry for answering this late. I'v been away and simply forgot. I read it i...

British postwar tests on armor
Can someone give information about these tests, when they had been conducted, their results and where primary sources about them can be found?
Thank you.
Thank you.

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret
Bill. What about the splinters from that backing plate which are said to have killed the staff on the bridge?

Re: Bismarck construction flaws
One major flaw of the Bismarck design were the exposed communication system as is often claimed. But they were beneath the armored deck. So why was it so "easy" to disable them? I wonder if other BBs better would have fared better at that.

Bismarck's armor against long range hits
The Bismarck design is often touted as mediocrely or badly armored against long range fire. Now I read that this has not been the case as findings of primary sources prove, that the armor scheme did take plunging shells into account. Is that really so? I think Mr. Thorsten Wahl/Thoddy and Delcyros w...

Re: 38 cm shells
Another interesting aspect is that among similar caliber projectiles, with blunter head shapes, the amount of deck penetration is virtually the same per angle of fall, despite disparate weights and striking velocities. Given an angle of fall of about 30 degrees, the deck penetration of a 2700lb 16”...

Re: 38 cm shells
Dave once wrote that the light german 38 cm shell was in fact a better deck penetrator than other heavier shells, contrary to the believes of many. It would decelerate faster ,because of its lightness, and thus descend at a steeper angle at long range allowing it to penetrate deck armor better. So I...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws
Yes. Confusion on my part. Thanks.

There may be some confusion here from the DS battle, where one of the three hits by POW did penetrate a boiler room, where five stokers suffered serious scald wounds.

So I conclude these are just biased claims made on some obviously biased forum?

Re: Bismarck construction flaws
And did Bismarck suffer a hit in her boiler room during her final fight? Some claim so. Her vitals were supposed to be immune against such hits at these ranges.
