Re: A desicive battle WW2
Codebreaking for the Allies got a bit better in the 6 months between Rheinubung and this threads timeline. U110 was captured in May '41 with an Enigma machine and other paraphernalia. By July ship losses had dropped dramatically (60 percent +/-) until November. http://www.edn.com/electronics-blogs/e...

Re: KGV sorties with POW
If Bismarck was initially loaded with HE, wouldn't the easiest course of action be to fire the loaded guns and then reload with AP rather than unload the HE and then reload with AP? A hit (unlikely, but one never knows) on the opening salvo from a 15" HE shell would still cause damage and, even...

Re: Hit on POW compass platform
Reading through this thread, there have been suggestions that the shell entering the CP encountered nothing more substantial than glass(?) and thin metal plating.
Would that have been enough to detach the shell's windscreen?

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Thanks Paul, In your reply you posted: ...So, it follows that salvo 19 was fired using guns 1 and 4, salvo 20 was a reload of either 1 or 4. Salvo 21 was from gun 3 - the problem being a shell having been hoisted without cordite charges to fire it... Could salvo 20 be from (a cleared) gun 3 and salv...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
All, Is it correct to say that POW's salvo nos. 19, 20 and 21 were fired using the shells loaded in the guns in the turret (4 shells fired in total and not full turret salvoes, 12 shells fired) as I see the timings for the firing are only 20 seconds apart and therefore not of a long enough interval ...

RnFanDan,
No, I was using the american terms as a form of shorthand (BB, Battleship; BC, Battlecruiser; CA, Hevy Cruiser, etc.)

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Purely hindsight, But after Hood's loss and the (for whatever reason) POW's disengagement, a BB added to the shadowing force seems like a splendid idea. No one in an RN ship knew IF Bismarck and PE would split up immediately after the battle. One CA shadowing Bismarck while the other shadows PE coul...

Johnalbion, I'm inclined to believe the 'left over ammunition from WW1' story is false. I direct your attention to this thread on another board which makes sense to me. http://warships1discussionboards.yuku.com/reply/302803/The-Admiralty-papers-on-cordite-and-the-BCF#reply-302803 Post 132 by ChrisPa...

... Prince of Wales also carried 4 octuple 40mm Bofors (32 guns) No she didn't. Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Antonio, Looking at the diagram and the drawing by WW you've posted above, WW could have seen the relevant parts of Hood from the top (30 000 yard) depiction. His drawings of Hood don't represent the ship very well. Perhaps he sketched her from the waterline up to give a little context for others to...

Thanks Dave.
Was type 282 a 'little brother' of type 285?
I'm wondering how the aircraft arrangements on an Iowa would suit KM practices?

Re: Germans in WWII having Iowa class battleships
Dave, Could you expand a little on your first paragraph I'm a little confused. Yes they did. It was by AEG and it was code named Rettin. It could have come into service had the war in Eurpoe lasted a bit longer. Germany was the only one that developed such system for light Flak during WWII. The Brit...

Re: Germans in WWII having Iowa class battleships
Some questions and thoughts. I'm curious to know when the four Iowa's would commission into the KM? Historically, Iowa didn't reach the US Navy until Feb '43. If one had been available (to the US) in 1940-41 I doubt there would have been any Bofors (and equivalent radars) to mount on it more likely ...
