Re: Most Beautiful Dreadnought

I still can't for the life of me agree with folks who say HOOD was a pretty ship. Just looking at how her after third was so low to the water as to be completely swamped in anything but the calmest of seas...

My top 5:

Re: Any Research on the Fate of the Wreck of the Bismarck?

Another factor would be that the paint and other anti-corrosion measures taken for a warship in 1940 would be far superior to a luxury liner of 1912.

Re: Bismarck Paint storage

Kept in a location under the armor and where it can be flooded as necessary. Makes sense for that time period. On modern carriers, I know it is kept aft on the hangar deck with the rest of the HAZMAT, where it can be shoved overboard if necessary.

Re: World's worst admiral

Chuichi Nagumo For many (including Japanese heroes as Fuchida) he was responsible of the utter defeat at Midway According to Tully and Parshall in Shattered Sword , Fuchida's post war writings, especially about Midway, are full of falsehoods, and the Japanese don't lend them much credence. That bei...

Re: Unluckiest Warship

RF, Today's Hollyweird would gladly take the opportunity to make the US Navy look like dog poo. I gotta agree with the nomination of HMS Mary Rose. The flagship of the fleet. Brand new and the most expensive ship yet built for the Royal Navy. With King Henry VIII watching from the shore, she set out...

Re: U=boats vs US subs: an alternative perspective

According to Clay Blair's "Silent Victory," the US subs that were sent to Europe tangled with a few U-boats and fired a few torps at German merchants, but none were officially credited with any kills before being withdrawn and sent to the Pacific.

Re: U=boats vs US subs: an alternative perspective

One squadron of US fleet boats was sent to European waters to fight u-boats and blockade runners, but that was the squadron that had the H.O.R. engines, which were abysmal failures. They were withdrawn, re-engined, and sent to the Pacific. That squadron included USS Harder , which was made famous by...

Re: World's worst admiral

Despite what Fuchida wrote (most of his writings are debunked in Tully and Parshall's Shattered Sword ), Nagumo's actions at Midway were only surpassed in lack of brilliance by his failure to launch waves 3 and 4 at Pearl Harbor. Put Halsey or Mitscher in his place in those two battles and the diffe...

Re: Kitakami and Oi

When we fired fish, we wrote the firing order down and tacked a protractor to the floor. At the appropriate time interval, we opened the order and laid out tape measures along the angles from the center of the protractor to see if they intersected the ships' movements at the times when the fish and ...

Re: Kitakami and Oi

In our scenario, the CL launched all 40 fish rather quickly, before the USN spotted her over on one side of their formation. They saw the other IJN ships making torp runs and started evading from them only to run into the two spreads from OI. About 1/4 of her fish found their marks. The DD caught on...

My choice is much simpler, but when you think about it...it is all attitude. USS TEXAS. Like the state motto used to say, "Don't Mess With TEXAS!"

Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History

It was a significant battle. It epitomized warfare at sea for the steam age but it wasn't all that great. I wonder: if Halsey had left TF34 in Surigao Strait, would Jutland still be considered to be the height of battleship combat? What about if Halsey had left TF34 in San Bernadino Strait? THAT wo...
