Re: Richelieu vs. South Dakota
The nose shape (of the main body -not the cap) was found by the USN and the Germans prior to the war, and further confirmed by the British later, to be of extreme importance to oblique penetration performance. The French engineers would likely expect that such performance could not be obtained at l...

Re: Richelieu vs. South Dakota
Yes, it's intriguing how a shell could defeat so much armor given the circumstances... There was also another 406mm shell (the 5th strike) which perforated 16 + 18 + 8 + 13 + 15 + 100mm of steel on Jean Bart's stern, allthough I don't know if the steel was armor grade. the problem were the very thi...

Re: Terminal Velocity of Bombs
if pentration occurs through whether and armored deck(50mm + 80mm) the ballistic resistance is expected to be somewhat lowered compared to an single plate of same thickness(130 mm) as pentration ability of the bomb is probably not affected by the first plate

Re: British v German rangefinders
I pretty sure german optics of the WW1 timeline were somewhat better than their british counterparts. I remember reading about a british offer via a neutral country regarding sniper optics for rubber. Incidentally my textbook is from the end of the fifties. Hence it should include also summarised kn...

Re: British v German rangefinders
From a textbook of optical measurements procedures "A comparison of stereoscopic rangefinder with other optical rangefinders shows that all procedures are based on the same geometric basis. Thus they were of same accuracy in general. Stereoscopic measurement has the advantage, that the accuracy...

Re: Bismarck vs. Iowa
But Bismarck is 10 feet wider in beam, which makes their overall target footprints equal for all practical purposes. ther is a little comment I have to made. even bismark was 36 m wide it doesnt mean that you are able to in every case of potential deck perforations to hit something important about ...

Re: Bismarck vs. Iowa
The two vessels spot each other on radar at about 35,000 yards the american captain wasnt aware about the radar detection equipment on board as Tirpitz was receiving pulses from the US radar. Therfor combat readines was commanded several minutes before a blip was seen on the scope. in between 35 ky...

Re: Tirpitz plate results...
german research conclude from thir results that plate support was mostly negligible. They shot 15 cm AP-projectile at 460 m/s against plates with heavy steel construction support (ca 24 tons) no support http://www.kbismarck.org/forum/download/file.php?id=389 their general finding was that was practi...

Nathan Okun has postet some data for the 14 " Mark 16 mod 4 projectile http://www.navweaps.com/index_nathan/Armor_Penetration_of_USN_14in_Mark-16_Mod-4_AP.pdf even its definately not easy to derive an angular performance from this data but it's possible to obtain some interesting informations <...

Re: Tirpitz plate results...
It´s still a remarkable performance - 0.98 cal penetration* CA at 30 deg obliquity and 476 m/s. Similar performance of the 38cm L4.4 APC was 0.9 cal KC at 30 deg and 500 m/s (altough the definition here was different requiring the projectile to either completely penetrate in a broken condition or t...
