Re: Secundary guns turrets

Strangely enough, there seems to be an error in Draminski´s AOTS Scharnhorst. The fore 15cm barbettes are above compartments 17 and 18 (15cm magazine and handling room), but in the aft ones these compartments are farther to the stern. Is this a mistake or the arrangement was different? https://i.pos...

Re: Secundary guns turrets

I was under the impression that there were "flash blockers" in the line of ammo from storage to gun deck. They opened upward and the shell passed through, then they closed. I've seen this in operation at least once, but lordy, that was 30+ years ago. Ready to say "Oops". Yes, an...

Re: Secundary guns turrets

Below every foremost turret is a handling room. The 15 cm magazines were behind bulkheads of this handling room. The shells and charges were stored on the opposite side of these bulkheads (distance ~1.5m). Ammunition was transported through small hatches into the handling room. The hatches were loc...

Re: Secundary guns turrets

Hi guys. Revisiting this. Frontal protection of the secondary battery turrets in Bismarck is 100mm. Foremost turrets had a barbette that go to the armoured deck, the armoured deck has an opening for the turret internal structure. And below that is the magazine. Was not this a risky design? A shell p...

Re: Differences between 10,5-cm (4.1") Krupp Naval guns S.K. L/40 and L/45?

Hello Marcelo, thank you for your addition, I have not yet worked so deeply into these metallurgic detail constructions. However, I am familiar with the rough connections between Armstrong and Krupp and each of their developments. I've also noticed the so-called thickening at the end of the gun bar...

By the way; - What you mean with a-tube ? Regards Holger Hi Holger. Big guns are not made from a single piece, but consist of concentric tubes. As seen in the following diagram, the a-tube is the inner one, the one that has the rifling and that can be changed once rifling has been worn out. The con...

Re: Differences between 10,5-cm (4.1") Krupp Naval guns S.K. L/40 and L/45?

Hi Holger. Yes, the surest way to identify a gun is measuring it. I have been involved with a similar doubt about an old Rodman rifled gun we have in Argentina, and finally had to travel to its location, photos were of no use. And very important, take photos of the muzzle, where you can discern a bu...

Re: Election of Javier Milei as Argentina's president

What interests me about this is the idea of using the US Dollar as the currency, as in the past this would have been seen as the country being dominated or owned by the United States as a ''gringo imperialism.'' Are these ideas now dead? Or could they re-surface over time, especially if the economy...

Re: Election of Javier Milei as Argentina's president

I see that the BBC in Britain has reported that a ''far right'' candidate named Javier Milei has won the election to be Argentina's next president by an 11% margin. I'm not quite sure why the BBC describes him as ''far right'' except I suspect that they don't like his politics and that Trump has en...

They are quiet different: The /45 has the recoil springs on top of the barrel: http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNGER_41-45_skc06_U98_pic.jpg The /40 has them on the sides of the barrel: http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNGER_41-40_skc00_Bremen_gun_pic.jpg The drawings in https://forum.axishistory.co...

Re: German strategy: Middle East vs Russia

Hi Marcelo, Agreed, once you have achieved 4 in your list above and secured fuel for an escorting Italian Fleet there is no need to travel overland. "Rommel of the Afrika Corps" would never have existed if he had needed to drive all the way to Libya from southern Europe. (No ADAC breakdow...

Re: German strategy: Middle East vs Russia

I made a measurement with google maps, there are 2 000 km from Alexandria to Caucasus thru modern day Irak. I really do not understand that Rommel thought that this could be possible. Not only the long travel for the tracked vehicles but maintaining the logistics this far. https://i.postimg.cc/0yM68...
