Re: The Yamato that got away
As Davw said-a commission was set up in mid-April to investigate the case thoroughly. The commission came out with a comprehensive report in late July, which placed a considerable blame on the Torpedo Department. The TD, it was found, had supplied the boats with the new magnetic firing pistol with f...

Re: The Yamato that got away
On 22 Jun 1940, U-46 observed one carrier, identified as HMS Illustrious (87), with two destroyers during a Force 11 storm in grid BE 6378. Endrass fired a salvo of three torpedoes at the carrier and heard a detonation. ???? :? :? The carrier was in fact HMS Ark Royal (91) (Capt C.S. Holland, RN), a...

Re: Most successful RN Carrier of WW2
SIMPLY THE BEST--BETTER THAN ALL THE REST Illustrious was the lead ship in her class of aircraft carriers. The design was unique in the sense that the flight deck was armored, unlike many of her contemporaries outside her class; however, the added protection also limited the total number of aircraf...

Re: AVRO LANCASTER B1&3 v BOEING B17G FLYING FORTRESS
An aerial combat between the two bombers would,IMHO,result in the Lancaster being shot out of the sky.Lancasters at best were armed with 8X 0.303" m/c guns-two in nose turret,2 mid upper turret and 4 in the tail turret or 2X 0.5" m/c guns and no dorsal turret. The B17 G on the other hand h...

Re: Rodney torpedoes compared to Long Lance?
Vis a vis Tassafaronga "Training, training and more training", Nimitz named the lesson of this battle, quite correctly in one sense, but training was not needed with the crews, but for the leaders. Wright had blundered in not allowing Cole to fire torpedoes when he wanted, for whatever it ...

Re: AVRO LANCASTER B1&3 v BOEING B17G FLYING FORTRESS
Short answer Paul -YES and YES. It is inconceivable that once a box of B17's comes under attack-the speed of the enemy attack will have the B17 gunners firing all over the sky. Due to the Luftwaffe Schräge Musik attacks, a variety of unofficial field modifications were made, including fitting of 20 ...

Re: SUEZ 1956- NAVAL ACTION
I'm not aware of any official declaration of war in respect to the Suez operation. Egypt was at war with Israel, a state it did not recognise, but not with either Britain or France. RF -you are right-Having read through the entire Suez Crisis text-I could not find any formal Declaration of War by G...

Re: SPITFIRE v HURRICANE IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN
Spitfire Mk V carried two 20 mm cannon and Huricane Mk IIc carried four 20mm cannon-these were the first variants of both aircraft to be so armed.I believe Hurricane Mk IIc was used in the North African campaign as Tankbusters.

SUEZ 1956- NAVAL ACTION
The Sinking of the Domiat On the evening of 31 October 1956, with Egypt and Britain being at war during the Suez Canal crisis, the HMS Newfoundland, a British Fiji-class cruiser, was patrolling the Red Sea south of Suez. She encountered a darkened ship passing here in the opposite direction. The Ne...

Re: Battle of Spartivento-Comparisons
Nearly all sources acknowledge the Italian fleet inflicted significant damage and several casualties on the British squadron while suffering minimal damage and no casualties in return. The action, however, represented a failure on the Italians' part to exploit their advantage and destroy the convoy....

Re: Battle of Spartivento-Comparisons
Campioni, although he had a mandate to be conservative, he had presided over the loss of Italy's best opportunity to deal the British a sharp setback in a fleet action. His days of command at sea were numbered. As Iachino remarked, "the use of these ships, which constituted at that moment near...
