Re: Battleship Vittorio Veneto

As far as I can see the origin document RobertsonN is referring to, is ADM 281/31 The Ballistic performance of Spaced Armour Assemblies and the effect od varying the Arrangement of plate thickness but this report deals with decapping effects of plate arrangements and their comparative performances u...

Re: Terminal Velocity of Bombs

Tallboy had a terminal velocity of ~1,100 m/sec which would require a drop from over 5,500 m.
Seems to me the speed must be somthing wrong maybe 1.100ft/sec

terminal velocity of 1,100m/s requires roughly 110 sec of free fall, even if we neglect air resistance

v=a*t

1100m/s~9,81m/s²*110s

Re: Elongation of Homogeneous Armor

My name at navweaps is Thoddy.
in my eyes it is necessary to clarify technical meanings, before a certain discussion on the material properties get started.
The "elongation problem" is central part of any discussion on german armor properties, as it has been used to assume some inferiority.

hint each line is representing the result from measurement series of 30 or so individual measurements

10 U... 10m Basisgerät
6 U ... 6m Basisgerät
3 U ... 3m Basisgerät

as you can see they also conduct long range as well as short range training

and a exercise

Re: Total number of shells fired by Bismarck and straddles

the director layer firing on the up roll instead of using the gyro-stabilized firing circuit in the fire control center, rapid roll might have caused the shells to leave the muzzles just very slightly late, bearing in mind there is a finite time between closing the firing circuit and the instant th...

Re: Battleship Vittorio Veneto

Just looking at the vertical component of the velocity and the mass of the SD 1400, wrong velocity of fall is independent from mass. But ther is a limit of velocity somewhere dependent on the air resistance of the falling bomb. Where does the knowledge comes from, that a projectile moving supersoni...

Re: Total number of shells fired by Bismarck and straddles

Bismarck, in theory, had a functioning radar ranging system capable of generating very accurate ranges and range rates and yet she never landed a single round with the potential to enter PoW's citadel. and thus the range had to be within a few hundreds yds of the range indicated on PoW's track char...
